March 13th is World Sleep Day and we have been celebrating National Sleep Week all week!
We NEED to have good sleep to have a good immune system!
One of the best ways to help yourself - both your community and your body in general is to get the needed hours of sleep.
Standard guidelines are 7 - 9 hours of sleep. Number of needed hours can vary depending on personal needs as well as age.
Sleep hygiene is very important in helping us get the proper sleep.
Consistency is key! Go to bed and wake up the same time every day. Yes, even on the weekends!
Make your bedroom a haven for sleep - make sure it is dark, quiet, relaxing, and a comfortable temperature.
Remove electronics - smartphones, computers, gaming devices, and TV's from the bedroom.
Utilize meditation and guided imagery to help relax yourself to be able to sleep.
Avoid large meals, high fat/salt snacks, caffeine, and alcohol before bed.
Exercise! Physical activity throughout the day can assist you in falling asleep more easily at night.
Of course, it is always good to speak with your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.
