UPMC EMS Fellowship

We offer a one-year program of mentorship, didactics, and hands-on experience that covers the breadth of clinical, operational, and administrative core content of the specialty of EMS. This program aims to prepare the trainee to pass the Board Exam in EMS when it becomes available and to assume a leadership role in EMS. We offer diverse experiences to provide the practical knowledge to be successful in all areas of prehospital medicine and disaster preparedness. An optional second year is also available, with longitudinal clinical field experiences across both fellowship years and the opportunity to complete a masters degree or certificate program in public health, clinical research, or education. The NAEMSP Prehospital Trauma Compendium presents expert guidance on blood product transfusion in trauma care. Hemorrhagic shock is a leading cause of preventable death, and prehospital blood transfusion is evolving as a critical resuscitation strategy. This position statement offers consensus recommendations to improve prehospital trauma care and patient outcomes. Co-authors include Pitt faculty: Drs. Brown, Martin-Gill, and Guyette.

New publication from Univ Pitt EMS faculty! 🚑👶

How often is spinal motion restriction (SMR) used in pediatric EMS care, and what factors influence its application? This study analyzed over 620,000 injured children transported by EMS and found that 10.8% received SMR. Key factors linked to SMR use included older age, longer transport times, altered consciousness, high pain scores, and certain injury mechanisms (e.g., pedestrian or non-traffic MVCs).

These findings can help refine pediatric EMS guidelines and ensure SMR is used appropriately in prehospital care.

We identified multiple factors associated with SMR use. These findings provide an opportunity to evaluate practices, track changes, and assess the impact of updated SMR guidelines in pediatric EMS.

New publication from Univ Pitt EMS faculty! 🚑🩺

Night shift workers face a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but why? This study highlights blunted blood pressure (BP) dipping (when BP doesn’t drop 10-20% during sleep) as a key, modifiable factor linked to increased CVD risk. Research suggests strategic napping could help restore normal BP patterns and reduce risk. Future studies are needed to explore this mechanism and improve shift worker health.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39953922/

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of adult death in the United States. Numerous studies show that night shift workers face a disproportionately higher risk of CVD compared to non-shift workers. Despite these data, the scientific and medical communities have not identified the physiol...
