In October 2024, we made a commitment to our nurses to more aggressively review and adjust their pay. This week, we invested another $23 million in pay increases, in pursuit of that commitment.

We have some of the most talented nurses in the field. And we know they can choose to work anywhere.

At UPMC, our goal is to make sure they wake up every day happy with their decision to work here.

This week, we announced an investment of $23 million to increase their pay since that commitment was made.

Amanda's journey began as a young asthma patient, spending time in hospitals and being inspired by the respiratory therapists who helped her breathe easier. That experience sparked a passion. Today, Amanda leads the Respiratory Care team at UPMC Carlisle, where she has been making a difference for 16 years.

As the manager of Respiratory Care and co-chair of Emergency Management, Amanda is known for her organized, accountable, and adventurous leadership style. Her colleagues say she's the kind of leader who makes people want to stay and grow.

With two master's degrees, critical care credentials, and a heart for her community, Amanda is a shining example of UPMC's values of excellence and innovation. Whether she's at a bedside or building systems that support her team, Amanda leads with empathy and purpose.

"When you're given a responsibility, you give it all you've got," Amanda shares. And she doesn't just say it, she lives it, every day.

For nearly 30 years, Doug has been a cornerstone of UPMC’s Building & Maintenance Services. His journey started in corporate real estate, but his passion for engineering and maintenance has always been at the heart of his work.

Through education and mentorship, Doug grew his skills—and now he’s paying it forward. He inspires youth in city programs to explore careers in engineering, maintenance, and the trades.

Two years ago, Doug faced one of life’s biggest challenges: a heart transplant. Reflecting on that moment, he says, “That was my greatest reward. I’m still here. A lot of people can’t say that.”

Grateful and driven, Doug hopes the next generation will carry the torch: “I’m blessed to work for UPMC. I just hope the next generation of engineers will one day take my spot and keep it going.”

Doug’s impact reaches far beyond the walls he helps maintain; it lives on in the lives he’s touched, the buildings he’s cared for, and the inspiration he offers to those who will follow in his footsteps.
