Sandy Miller is a wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, pet owner, and a UPMC employee. She is also an advocate for women experiencing breast cancer, as her story includes not one, but two diagnoses with the disease. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues, we are sharing Sandy's remarkable story of resilience, perseverance, and gratitude. Give it a read!

"I am thankful to not only receive treatment at the Hillman Cancer Center, but I am also thankful for my work network. The group I work alongside at UPMC Health Plan is an inspiration. The health plan as a whole promotes kindness in its culture, I witness it every day. Personally, I am the recipient of emails, texts, and messages just to ask how I am doing, they always seem to come at the right time. The act of kindness no matter the size goes a very long way."

Being diagnosed with terminal cancer did not stop Sandy Miller from pursuing a full life. She shares her story of support and inspiration with UPMC Careers.

Meet Andrea — a nurse with a heart big enough for both her patients and a house full of rescued animals.

At UPMC Chautauqua’s Emergency Department, Andrea brings expert care to patients in their most critical moments. But her dedication doesn’t end when her shift does.

At home, Andrea fosters and rescues animals through the Empire Animal Rescue Society, transforming her space into a sanctuary that features eight goats, six cats, five dogs, three horses, a donkey, a turtle, a rabbit, and a saltwater aquarium filled with fish.

Her journey from LPN to RN through the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at UPMC Hamot provided her with the opportunity to advance her career while staying true to her lifelong passion. With the support of her UPMC team, Andrea has found a balance between purpose and passion.

Her colleagues have rallied around her cause, many even opening their homes to foster pets. Together, Andrea and the UPMC Chautauqua team prove that compassion doesn’t stop at patient care; it extends to every life in need.

Just as she cherishes every animal she rescues, Andrea brings that same care and respect to every patient she meets. Her story is a beautiful reminder that when your career supports your passions, you don’t have to choose between purpose and balance — you get to live both.

After years of working as a radiologic technologist, Leslie felt a pull toward something more meaningful. When a loved one was diagnosed with cancer, it sparked a passion that led her back to school to study Radiation Therapy.

She spent much of her career in Florida, but in 2018, Leslie returned home to Pennsylvania. By 2019, she was ready to get back to what she loves most: caring for patients.

Leslie joined UPMC, drawn by its advanced technology and the opportunity to grow through its career ladder for radiation therapists. In just five years, she’s advanced two positions and now serves as a Clinical Therapist Specialist.

Why Radiation Therapy? Leslie shares a few reasons:

🤝 Building meaningful relationships with patients over weeks of daily care
📆 Enjoying work-life balance with weekends and holidays off
📈 Exploring career growth into roles like Medical Dosimetrist, administration, or education
💲Competitive salaries and benefits

Her most memorable moments? Watching patients ring the gong at the end of treatment and hearing that she made their journey a little easier. “That means I did my job,” she says.

At UPMC Divine Campus, Leslie is part of a team that feels like family—united by one mission: the patients. 💜

Thank you, Leslie, for your compassion, dedication, and the light you bring to every patient’s journey. We’re so lucky to have you!
