Early in her inpatient pharmacy career at UPMC, Amanda had a moment she'll never forget. While delivering medications on the hospital floors, a physician mistook her for a CNA and ask her to take a patient's vitals—sparking a wave of imposter syndrome she had battled for years.

With her confidence shaken, she replied, "I'm just a pharmacy technician." What happened next changed everything. The physician, recognizing the thoughts swirling through Amanda's mind, looked her in the eye and said: "You are not just a pharmacy technician. What you do is vital. None of this would be possible without you. Don't ever forget that."

These words became a driving force in Amanda's career, and a message she now shares with others across UPMC.

Today, Amanda serves as a Program Manager for Pharmacy Technician Training, helping standardize education, expand opportunities, and elevate the essential role pharmacy technicians play in every care setting.

Her message to others, whether they're years into their careers or just starting out, remains the same: No one is "just" anything. Every role matters. Every person matters.

We're proud to spotlight Amanda for her leadership, resilience, and unwavering commitment to lifting others up, just as someone once did for her.

Jason's career in physical therapy began right where his roots were planted, central Pennsylvania. Growing up in South Williamsport, he headed to Misericordia University with two goals: to play basketball and to pursue his passion for helping others through a degree in Physical Therapy. After graduating, he returned home, started his career in a local skilled nursing facility—and soon after, started his family too.

As life got busier, Jason picked up a PRN role with UPMC. He quickly realized what made UPMC different: support leadership, reliable teammates, and the flexibility his family needed.

Fifteen years later, he made the jump to full-time Home Health with UPMC and hasn't looked back.

What motivates him today? Seeing patients succeed where it matters most, in their everyday lives.

"People will walk up to me at a store or church and say 'Hey, remember me?' Super gratifying!! It is certainly fulfilling to know that I am affecting your independence and your ability to enjoy your life," Jason says.

Home health therapy looks different from clinic-based care, and that's what Jason loves about it. Kitchen sinks become parallel bars. Yards and driveways become gait-training terrain. The therapy isn't theoretical, it's practical.

Above all, Jason values his team that brings together a wide range of clinical backgrounds and encourages collaboration at every level. At UPMC, he's found a workplace where he feels heard, valued, and equipped to make a difference.

This is home health done right. This is UPMC. Explore open home health opportunities at the link in our bio.

Today we're celebrating Employee Appreciation Day and the people who make UPMC all that it is.

Every day, our employees show up with purpose: caring for patients, supporting members, solving problems, offering comfort, finding answers, and stepping in for one another in the moments that matter most. And while their roles may look different, what they share is a deep commitment to caring.

If you’ve ever crossed paths with a UPMC nurse who made you feel heard, a scheduler who worked with your timeline, a support teammate who went the extra mile, or someone behind the scenes who kept everything moving, you’ve experienced their impact firsthand.

Our team is made up of real people with real stories: people who bring their whole selves to work, who care deeply about their communities, and who support one another in ways big and small. Their differences, backgrounds, and personal journeys make us stronger.

To our 100,000+ employees: thank you for the compassion you share and the difference you make every day.

Meet Devon, a Lead Medical Lab Scientist at UPMC, whose favorite hobby started 30 feet below the surface. Introduced to diving at age 12 by his grandfather, what began as weeks of intense classroom sessions and pool training grew into a lifelong passion and a shared adventure.

From photographing vibrant Caribbean reefs to navigating 100-foot-deep caves in Florida, Devon has explored sights most people never will. His talent has taken him through Bonaire, the Bahamas, Cozumel, the Florida Keys, and now to historic shipwrecks off Myrtle Beach — each dive offering a new story beneath the waves.

At UPMC, we celebrate the passions that make our people extraordinary, above sea level and far below it.

Stitched with heart!

Gina is a Systems Analyst at UPMC whose creative passion comes together one thoughtful stitch at a time. Inspired by her neighbor's quilting and a lifelong admiration for her mom, who could sew just about anything, Gina picked up quilting in January 2022 and quickly fell in love with the craft.

From beginner-friendly rag quilts to more complex traditional designs, quilting has taught Gina patience, problem‑solving, and the value of stepping back when things don’t go as planned.

Each quilt begins with a person in mind. Gina carefully considers their personality, style, and favorite colors before building a design, much like how she approaches her work at UPMC. Focused, detail‑driven, and solution‑oriented, she finds clarity in both fabric and function.

The thoughtfulness, care, and heart Gina brings to her quilting is the same heart she brings to her work and to the UPMC team every day. We’re proud to celebrate her passions—and the creativity and compassion that make her such an important part of our community.

When winter storms challenged communities across the country a few weeks ago, our team stepped up to support one another and those we serve.

James, a Project Analyst, and Gabe, an Administrative Fellow, stepped outside their day-to-day roles to support extended cafeteria hours at UPMC Shadyside ... trading desks for hair nets to help ensure others were cared for.

As we approach Valentine’s Day, their pepperoni‑heart pizza is a simple reminder that compassion and teamwork are often found in the behind‑the‑scenes moments. James and Gabe exemplify what it means to be changemakers—bringing UPMC’s values to life through service, responsibility, and care for others.

As the world looks ahead to the 2026 Winter Olympics, we’re celebrating a gold medalist of our own at UPMC.

Jesse has been a valued member of the UPMC community since 2010, serving as a kitchen steward in Food Services at UPMC Harrisburg. Outside of work, he’s also a world‑class athlete. Jesse’s journey with Special Olympics began in first grade, when a teacher introduced him to track and field. In high school, he discovered alpine skiing ... and the fit was instant.

“I’m built for speed,” Jesse says. “I pretty much picked it up right from the start.” And built for speed he truly was.

On March 13, 2025, Jesse made history as the first Pennsylvanian to win gold at the World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. By less than four‑tenths of a second, Jesse secured his spot at the top of the podium at the Special Olympics World Winter Games, earning a gold medal in the Intermediate Super‑G (Super Giant Slalom).

When he returned home, he was welcomed with pride, celebration, and admiration from his coworkers and the broader UPMC community. It was about more than a medal—it was a celebration of who Jesse is.

His supervisor, John, shares: “Jesse is the person who always lifts me up on stressful days. He truly cares about the people around him, and that’s one of the many reasons he’s so special. He’s a great coworker—and an even better lifelong friend.”

We are so proud of Jesse’s achievements, and even prouder that he chooses to share his talents, heart, and time with UPMC.
