Sound isolation is one of the most important aspects of acoustic design. Speech privacy between occupants depends on how well walls, ceilings, doors, and other construction elements prevent sound from traveling. A common misconception is that adding acoustic panels inside a room will stop noise from being transmitted. In reality, those treatments improve the internal sound quality but do little to block sound between spaces.

Speech privacy and sound and impact isolation are the main concerns in commercial spaces. Mechanical noise control is also important. Architectural and sound-masking solutions reduce unwanted noise and create an appropriate acoustical environment for personnel.

Vibration may seem minor, but in the wrong environment, it can disrupt lab equipment, distract building occupants, or interfere with operations.

We have worked to reduce structure-borne noise from rooftop equipment disturbing classrooms below as well as determining the impact of railway vibration on science buildings. Using analysis tools such as modal testing, heel drop tests, and other vibration assessments, we help clients understand what is happening and what to do next.

Winter brings quieter landscapes; but inside buildings, transient sound can become more noticeable especially in quiet rooms with good sound isolation. Thoughtful acoustic design is essential for comfort year-round, but winter is a great time to start thinking about your next construction project. We provided acoustical consulting services for the Owners of this five-story mixed-use historical renovation project in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh, PA. The original factory building was constructed in the late 1800s and had various commercial tenants throughout the 20th Century. The building was renovated to become four independent condominium flats with retail space on the first floor.
