Transitional Characters

Transitional Characters The transitional character is someone who, in a single generation, changes the entire course of a lineage. This is therapy for the curse breakers.

This is therapy for people who want to see beyond themselves and envision a better world for everybody.

Those who were “Volun-Told” to come to this country — whether through joblessness or landlessness.
Or parents fleeing political exile.
For those who can’t choose between HOME and HERE.

Decolonizing Therapy is for the q***r and non-binary and pan and trans and demi youth (and every other Q***r person on the glorious kaleidoscope) that wants to come into themselves without apology.

It is a HOME. A space. A place. A vibe.
An energía of love and freedom to be.
And to help hold some of that intense trauma caused by fear and small-mindedness.

Decolonizing Therapy is for the homies on the Rez.
Antsy. Agitated. Roaming. Full.
Disconnected with that post-colonial rage.

I believe that people are traumatized because of a system that has been created with many arrangements that have been purposefully arranged.
This imperialist, neoliberalist, spiritually-bypassing cloud over us right now has let loose a poison — and we have been sick.

Lauryn & Dave & Bob & Eartha and so many more — KNEW.

So I won’t rest until therapy is fully:

Collective. That means group work is accountability work. It should be the fu***ng norm.

Until the children and elders are WELL and at the center of our work.

Until more “in-the-trenches” work is being done by QNBPOC folxs.

Until every kid can do a feeling check and let us know what they need — safely.

Until hetero-peeps are the minority.

Until intergenerational trauma is provided space and respect for the necessary healing.

Until we respect that therapeutic doesn’t equate to “knowing more.” I think it’s just an ability to HOLD more.

I’m Jennifer, and I am the creator and curator of Decolonizing Therapy, and I’m so glad you stopped here.

Oh — and the pic made me FEEEEELLLL summmmmmthangggg because that’s a metaphor of me when I get home from work, trying to shake off the energy that ain’t mine. Except with a mop of messy curly hair and my dope Goddess cat Isis at my heels.

It’s Election Day, go vote to retain your judges (a quick search is a good idea), and plz share this list of FOOD ACCESS resources to anyone and everyone who may be affected by the recent SNAP cuts.

You’re doing great. Keep going and don’t let greed take away the care our fellow humans deserve and need.

We can’t say it enough: our team at Transitional Characters is something special. 💜 Each therapist brings their full self into the room, carrying wisdom, compassion, and lived experience that makes this practice more than just a place for therapy — it’s a community.

Today’s the last day to vote for TC in City Paper’s Best of Pittsburgh 2025 under Best Health Advocacy Group. Your support means the world. (And maybe next year we can advocate for a mental health category of our own 😉).

To our clients and to Pittsburgh: thank you for trusting us. We’re grateful every day to walk alongside you in this work.

We made the front page of and I’m definitely not crying…

It was an absolute honor to have a Pittsburgh legend (and arguably the most dynamic person to ever interview me) write about us and the work we’re doing to create the community that often gets overlooked in the mental health world. Thank you so much to and .pic.rob.photography for an affirming and spiritually nourishing visit.

The thoughtfulness and care that Tony takes with his process is such a privilege to be a part of, please read the article in our profile.

Also If you ever wanted to work for a practice that sees things from your perspective, we’re hiring and we’re always accepting clients.

🌌 Sound Bath Yoga: A Pay-What-You-Can Chakra Series 🌌

This isn’t about perfection or performance. It’s about creating space to breathe, to release, and to reconnect with yourself in community.

Over this series, we’ll move through the chakras — not as abstract symbols, but as doorways into our own healing, balance, and freedom. With yoga, sound, and collective presence, we honor the body as a site of resistance, restoration, and liberation.

✨ Accessible to all — no prior experience needed
✨ Community-based — pay what you can, no one turned away
✨ Rooted in healing justice — for the freedom of all people

📰 Our first article!! We’re so glad they put the emphasis on “shoes off” 🙃

This week, Pittsburgh City Paper featured our practice, our team, and our community in a piece that really gets what we’re doing here — building a different kind of therapy practice. One that feels less like a office and more like home. One where joy, grief, and healing can all sit on the same couch.

We’re proud to be the first group in Pittsburgh to offer decolonial, liberation-focused care and the community that grows out of it. Liberation is not just a name or a stated value– it’s a deeply rooted practice informed by decades of study, education, and leadership from our founder, Liana Maneese, a published expert in the field. Now that the cat is out of the bag, we want to clarify that this work and the terminology that can be repurposed or rebranded is the product of a way of life and not simply an association with it to.
