10 Skin Care Secrets Shared By Your Derm:

1. SKIN CYCLING is a thing we've been doing for years, but was recently popularized on social media! It is especially good for those who feel that they cannot tolerate retinoids or other anti-aging products. It looks something like this (note everyone's skin is a bit different so you may need to modify this regimen to fit your skin's needs):
Day 1 exfoliate --> Day 2 retinoid --> Day 3 and 4 hydrate and restore the skin barrier. Repeat.

2. To tolerate retinoids try a retinoid sandwich! Apply a non-occlusive moisturizer --> retinoid --> reapply non-occlusive moisturizer

3. Apply sunscreen DAILY 365 days a year on face, neck and other sun exposed areas. Also apply your SPF BEFORE putting on clothes/bathing suits so you don't miss any spots near the edges of the clothing.

4. Never use makeup removing wipes. Period.

5. You are what you EAT! Limit simple sugars, dairy, caffeine and alcohol. A plant based diet is super healthy for your skin! Eat naturally colorful foods that are not "prepared" or "packaged" and that come straight from the earth.

6. SLUGGING is a trend that I'm on board with if it is done correctly. I recommend avoid slugging with a completely occlusive product such as Vaseline. Reach for a heavy moisturizer that is non-comedogenic (Lipikar Balm by La Roche Posay is one of my favorite for slugging). Also avoid applying completely occlusive products (ie. Vaseline) overtop any potential irritants as it can actually make them more irritating.

7. Wash your face AFTER brushing your teeth to remove the yeast, bacteria and irritating toothpaste from the skin.

8. Consistency and simplicity is KEY in a skin care regimen! Consistency does not have to mean every day, but should be regular. SKIN CYCLING is a great way to be consistent without using a product every day!

9. HAIR CARE products can cause acne! I often recommend SEEN shampoo and conditioner developed by a fellow Dermatologist for acne prone skin!

10. The best EXFOLIANTS are chemicals, not gritty scrubs. Look for AHA or BHA products to exfoliate!
