The Women in Science and Medicine Association would like to invite you to our upcoming Coffee Hour! We have invited Dr. Gwendolyn Sowa, MD, PhD, Chair of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Director of UPMC Rehabilitation Institute. She also co-directs the Ferguson Laboratory for Orthopaedic and Spine Research at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research focuses on determining the biology of intervertebral disc degeneration and developing biological and biomechanical therapies. In addition to being an award-winning clinician and well-funded scientist, she is passionate about mentoring trainees and works closely with medical students. We are very excited to hear from her about her career path and her work!

The coffee hours are designed to be an informal small-group discussion session with at most 10 students and an invited physician scientist. Our goal is to provide an environment where students and faculty can speak freely about navigating the training path and balancing the research and clinical components of a successful clinician-scientist career. We hope you will join us!

Hello all new and rising graduate students, a great opportunity to share your writing!

STAT, a health and medicine news site based in Boston, is seeking a Ph.D. biomedical graduate student in his or her first year to write an occasional column about the joys and pains of becoming a scientist.

You could be studying genetics, biochemistry, biomedical engineering or any other discipline that falls under the biomedical/life sciences umbrella. We are looking for someone anywhere in the US who will write from their perspective as this part of their career unfolds - balancing classes with rotations, prepping for qualifying exams, the joys of an experiment that works, the drama of troubleshooting those that don't. And of course, the quest for the paper that will launch (boost) your career.

For an example, please see Off the Charts, STAT's column written by a first-year medical resident.

We are looking for someone with some writing experience but you will work with an editor to hone your thoughts. If you have any questions, please contact editor (and grad school survivor) Megha Satyanarayana, meghas@statnews.com. Thanks!
