Last Thursday, Familylinks was honored to be recognized at the Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park Breakfast Club's Night of Giving. Each year, a select group of non-profits in the area is chosen to receive funding for programs that address the most significant issues in our communities. Our Downtown Outreach Center and Shelter (DOCS) was the beneficiary of our award, which was used to provide toiletries and clothing to incoming residents.

CLIENT CORNER! Leah’s* parents attempted to develop routines with Leah to help make non-preferred tasks easier to manage. Leah would often respond by hitting her parents or yelling as loud as she could until the task was removed. Leah’s parents sought help from the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) clinic at Familylinks. The ABA staff worked with Leah to reduce her negative reactions and develop routines around both preferred and non-preferred tasks. Within a month, Leah showed marked improvement in completing non-preferred tasks. *Names and images do not represent actual clients of Familylinks.

CLIENT CORNER! Mrs. Jackson* was used to gratefully receiving art projects completed by her son, Micah, in collaboration with staff when she picked him up from his social skills group. While in Familylinks’ Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) program, staff encouraged Micah to complete more of the crafts independently. Micah’s mother was visibly holding back tears when staff presented her with an art project that was completed entirely by Micah. *Names and images do not represent actual Familylinks staff.

CLIENT CORNER! Althea* would often become emotional and aggressive when she did not “win” while playing games. She had been observed switching game pieces after the game was over, insisting she had won, and shoving peers. With consistent intervention from our Applied Behavioral Analysis team, Althea began to recognize the importance of accepting outcomes in play interactions, even when they were not preferred. During a recent game, Althea became emotional but quickly calmed down when a peer won. *Names and images do not represent actual clients of Familylinks.

CLIENT CORNER! This week’s success story features Carter*, a client in our Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) clinic. Carter had been having difficulty transitioning away from wearing diapers. In just a couple of short weeks, with the use of consistent ABA techniques, positive reinforcement and collaboration between the staff members and Carter, toileting skills rapidly improved. Carter not only began staying dry but began communicating when he needed to use the bathroom. *Names and images do not represent actual clients of Familylinks.
