CLIENT CORNER! Kerry* came to Familylinks’ Phoenix program after a stay in a shelter. While in the shelter, Kerry struggled with drug and alcohol use as well as frequently leaving without permission. Kerry is someone who has often had the resources and determination to leave programs unless they are in a lockdown setting. Kerry’s time at Phoenix was different. She had one occurrence of unapproved leave and made significant progress in abstaining from drugs and alcohol, a direct reflection of staff consistency and relationship building. On the day of her discharge, Phoenix staff threw Kerry an impromptu pizza party. Kerry stated that this made her feel truly special and shared that no one had done something like this for her before. *Names and images do not reflect actual clients of Familylinks.

March 4th is World Fight Against Sexual Exploitation Day. Founded in 2009, following initiatives by the International Women’s Speaking Group and support from the United Nations, the message of this observance is that no one should be bought, sold, or silenced. According to the International Labor Organization, nearly five million women are victims of forced sexual exploitation annually, with children comprising over 20% of commercial sexual exploitation victims. One out of eleven boys experiences sexual assault before the age of 18. We ask you to help raise awareness by sharing this post, donating to Familylinks or another organization that supports survivors, and engaging in open conversations to break the culture of silence.

CLIENT CORNER! Jake* has worked tirelessly to maintain his sobriety. Upon meeting with a Familylinks Community Health Worker (CHW), it was discovered that, due to losing his job, having his SNAP benefits terminated, and receiving a 10-day eviction notice, Jake was closer than ever to relapsing. The CHW supported him in obtaining rental assistance, connected him to resources for food, and researched steady employment opportunities with Jake. Shortly after their initial meeting, the CHW received a text from Jake stating, “You give me a little bit of hope, I’m not so desperate as I was, you know, it really means a lot …” Due to the efforts of the CHW, Jake is increasing his stability and independence and is better equipped to earn a living. Most importantly, Jake remains in recovery. *Names and images do not represent actual clients of Familylinks

CLIENT CORNER! Maria* began seeing one of Familylinks’ behavioral health therapists to help overcome barriers related to anxiety and intrusive thoughts. Maria reported that while completing tasks, she would talk herself out of doing them because she felt that she would not be successful. During sessions with her therapist, Maria attempted small tasks and imitated the positive self-talk her therapist modeled. Maria became more comfortable and began using this technique outside of her sessions. Maria attributes her increased productivity and willingness to try new things to the support received from her Familylinks therapist. *Images and names do not represent actual clients of Familylinks.

This week is eating disorder awareness week. 30 million Americans are estimated to be suffering from an eating disorder, and most of these individuals have an underlying anxiety or depression disorder. If you notice a friend or family member exhibiting extreme concern for their body shape or size, or if they are frequently checking in the mirror for perceived flaws in their appearance, they may be suffering from an eating disorder. Eating disorders can cause lasting physical damage, so it’s important to seek support early. Familylinks' Outpatient Mental Health Clinic is available to offer education and therapeutic tools to help navigate this complex diagnosis. Contact us at 866-583-6003 or visit familylinks.org for more information.
