Today is World Prematurity Day đź’ś
Every year, families welcome their babies earlier than expected—sometimes weeks or even months before term, affecting behavior, mental health, and even lifelong conditions like asthma or hearing loss.

But the impact isn’t equal.
âť—Black birthing parents are 1.5Ă— more likely to deliver prematurely
âť—A premature Black baby is 2x more likely to die before their first birthday.

Today, we honor these babies, celebrate their strength, and call for the equitable care every family deserves.

🏥 Where you live can impact how you give birth.

A new study found that pregnant people in the most disadvantaged U.S. neighborhoods had a 73% higher risk of severe complications during delivery compared to those in the least disadvantaged areas and that neighborhood socioeconomic status (measured early in pregnancy) was linked to severe maternal morbidity at birth.

🔍 These findings highlight how structural inequities and place-based factors influence maternal health, especially for first-time parents.
