A Note of Reflection.
As I contemplate the actions and decisions surrounding the current administration's immigration policies, my heart grows heavy with sadness. I feel a profound sense of rage and anguish for those who are suffering, and it weighs on me deeply.
Our nervous system is beautifully designed to handle emergencies and moments of trauma, but it wasn’t meant to bear the burden of ongoing crises or complex trauma. This relentless strain can leave us feeling overwhelmed and weary.
As we navigate this uncertain path together, I encourage each of us to seek moments of rest and joy. After all, one of my favorite authors reminds us in her book, *Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto*, that embracing stillness can be a powerful act of resilience.
Stillness is not merely the absence of chaos; it’s a conscious choice to turn inward, breathe deeply, find our grounding, and remain present. In this stillness, we can truly connect with ourselves and discover a sense of calm.
And as one of my favorite therapists gently reminded me recently, it’s vital to voice our truths. Speak them aloud: “The threat is…” and then follow with, “I’m responding this way because…”. Our nervous systems crave this acknowledgment of the threats we’re all facing and the emotions they evoke. By recognizing our feelings, we can begin to heal, moment by moment.
For now, take a moment to breathe. Amid everything unfolding around us, if there’s one miracle I’ve witnessed, it’s the power of community. In these connections—whether with family, friends, neighbors, or support groups—we can find the solace and strength we all need. Together, we can navigate these challenging times.
And as always, if you need to speak with someone, reach out to me or go to my About page and look up therapists in the many directories I've listed.
With care,
Bree
