🐶 ❤️ Take care of that "dog"gone heart of yours! ❤️🐶

We're recognizing Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day! Did you know as many as 15.3 million Americans have heart valve disease? But 3 of 4 know little about this potentially disabling and deadly condition. So we recruited some of our most adorable volunteers to encourage you to learn more as they show off their heart-shaped sunglasses.

🌟 Office Support Volunteer Needed 🌟

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to make a difference for patients and families, our Office Support Volunteer role is a perfect fit.

What you’ll do:
✨ Greet visitors and help direct them to the right departments or staff
✨ Answer incoming phone calls and coordinate needs with hospice staff
✨ Assist with administrative tasks (filing, photocopying, monthly mailings, assembling admission packets)
✨ Support hospice families by accepting and returning materials for memory items
✨ Provide general office support to help our hospice team care for patients and families
✨ Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times

All Office Support Volunteers must complete Hospice Volunteer Orientation.

🎗️ Blessing Breast Center is hosting "Courage, Connection, Conversation: Uniting Women in Hope,” a community support group.

Join us Wednesday, March 18 at 6 pm in the Blessing Resource Center (420 N 34th, Quincy). We will hear from Certified Sexual Health Counselor Leah Heming, a proponent for normalizing communication about sexual health concerns. Her presentation will focus on sexual health concerns associated with cancer and treatment-related side effects.

💗 When “Normal” Test Results Aren’t Telling the Whole Story

Some heart conditions hide in plain sight, especially for women. Paradoxical low-flow, low-gradient (LFLG) severe aortic stenosis is a dangerous form of valve disease that can be missed on routine testing because women naturally have smaller hearts.

Symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, or chest pressure may be dismissed as “normal aging,” even when the heart is struggling. Blessing Cardiologist Dr. Jeffrey Cook and the Heart Valve Clinic team specialize in catching these silent cases and offering lifesaving treatments, including the minimally-invasive TAVR procedure.

🫶 During the Lenten Season (February 18 - April 2), the Spiritual Care Team at Blessing Hospital offers enhanced support, blending clinical healing with reflective practices to address meaning, uncertainty, and foster resilience.

The chaplains and communion ministers provide prayer, sacramental care (communion, anointing), and unbiased listening to assist patients in finding meaning, hope, connection, and comfort amid suffering.

Spiritual Care volunteers include pastors, deacons, lay ministers, and members from area places of worship. These individuals choose to give back to the hospital by providing spiritual support to our patients, their families, visitors, and staff. ❤️ How a Phone Call Between Two 90-Year-Old Veterans Saved a Life

When 91-year-old Marine Corps veteran Jim Nauert was told he needed a heart valve replacement, he wanted nothing to do with it. Uneasy about medical procedures, Jim was ready to refuse the lifesaving TAVR procedure recommended by his care team. That's until a fellow veteran, 92-year-old Donald Nagel, picked up the phone.

What followed was a powerful reminder that sometimes the strongest medicine is human connection. Donald’s encouragement gave Jim the courage to move forward, leading to a successful procedure and a brand-new outlook on life.
