Commonly called Cobbler's pose because the shoe makers in India were known to sit in this position as they work.

This pose is a blessing to women. It promotes a regular menstrual cycle and helps the ovaries to function properly. Pregnant women who sit in this pose daily for a few minutes will have much less pain during delivery and won't suffer from varicose veins.

Stimulates and increases blood flow to the abdomen, pelvis and back, relieves Sciatica pain, prevents hernia and is especially recommended to those with urinary, prostate or kidney issues.

Sit on floor with your legs stretched straight in front. Bend your knees and bring your feet closer to your body. Bring the soles of your feet together and grab the feet near the toes, bringing your heels closer to your perineum. The outer sides of both feet should rest on the floor as you feel the thigh bones dropping down towards the floor. Interlock your fingers around your toes, lengthen your spine upwards and gaze softly over the tip of the nose. Pay special attention to the movement of the breath and hold the pose for as long as you reasonably can.

A more advanced version of this pose would be to bend forward to rest the chin and the nose on the floor in front of you.

Try this pose for 30 seconds and let me know how you feel!

New students often say they won't be any good at yoga because their mind is always going. Here's a little secret I've learned: everyone's mind is always going. That's the nature of the mind! Yoga doesn't require you to start with a quiet mind because the practice of yoga is specifically designed for those of us with busy minds. Through the practice of yoga we learn that our thoughts aren't all there is to life. We find peace within the mind. That peace is Yoga.

Tadasana, Mountain Pose. Also known as Samasthiti, Equal Standing.

This is one of THE most important poses in yoga. There are elements of mountain pose in every other pose. If we can find alignment here, in tadasana, we don't even need to practice the other poses.

This pose teaches us how to stand properly, to take the pressure off the spine and to correct any imbalances in the body.
As with any pose, start with the foundation of your feet. Bring the big toes and the heels to touch. Spread the toes on the ground and balance the weight of the body evenly on the feet. Engage the thigh muscles to lift the knee caps. Activate the muscles of the hips to balance the pelvis. Wiggle the waist long, lift and broaden the chest. Reach the finger tips towards the ground as the arms plug in to the shoulder sockets. Feel like the neck doesn't even exist as the head balances on top of the spine. Soften the eyes and relax the tongue.

Tadasana - Mountain Pose

Try it!

When you step onto your mat you have the opportunity to meet yourself right where you are: the present moment.

One of the reasons new students get anxiety about their first class is because meeting yourself and being present is a scary thing.

We hold onto our avoidance of the present moment through various coping mechanisms; social media, meaningless conversations, activity without purpose.

When you finally get onto your yoga mat you find that's it was worth the fear. You feel alive for the first time. You feel invigorated.
