Fold3

Fold3 The web's premier collection of original military records.
(561)

Fold3 provides convenient access to US military records, including the stories, photos, and personal documents of the men and women who served. The Fold3 name comes from a traditional flag folding ceremony in which the third fold is made in honor and remembrance of veterans who served in defense of their country and to maintain peace throughout the world. Original records at Fold3 help you discover and share stories about these everyday heroes, forgotten soldiers, and the families that supported them. On Fold3, you can combine records found on the site with what you have in your own albums and shoeboxes to create an online memorial for someone who served.

On this day in 1952, the 1,000,000th Jeep rolled off the assembly line. Born from a 1939 design for a "General Purpose" vehicle, the Jeep transitioned from a WWII battlefield icon to a civilian staple back home. https://f3.social/6yct

This shot of a Civil War hospital near Washington, D.C., feels remarkably "directed" when you zoom in. While it captures a somber scene, notice how almost every soldier is fixed on the lens. You'll even spot men perched on the roof, peeking out windows, and tucked in by the tents, all waiting for the shutter to click. A fascinating look at a 19th-century "photo op." https://f3.social/6ycs

For this B-17 Flying Fortress crew, the ultimate pre-flight ritual wasn't a shot of adrenaline—it was a quiet spot of tea from the Y.M.C.A. Tea Car. A final moment of calm before crossing into the chaotic skies of occupied Europe. https://f3.social/6ycr

In March 1951, near Yangpyong, Korea, PFC Leonard Kravitz's unit was being overrun. As his platoon was forced to withdraw, Kravitz didn't retreat. He voluntarily stayed behind at his machine gun to provide the suppressive fire his brothers-in-arms needed to escape.

He turned the entire enemy's focus onto himself, knowing the cost. Because of his bravery, his entire platoon survived. PFC Kravitz did not.

After decades of waiting, he was finally awarded the Medal of Honor in 2014. Today, we remember the Brooklyn native who gave everything for the person standing next to him. https://f3.social/6ycq

In 1865, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker became the first (and still the only) woman to receive the Medal of Honor. Despite being a skilled surgeon during the Civil War, she was initially denied a commission because of her gender. She served anyway. While her medal was controversially rescinded in 1917 (along with hundreds of others), she refused to return it. Justice was finally served in 1977 when her honors were officially reinstated. https://f3.social/6yco

During the brutal battle for Iwo Jima, Navy Corpsman John Harlan Willis with the 27th Marines was wounded by shrapnel, but rushed to the front lines to treat fallen Marines. While administering life-saving plasma to a wounded Marine in a shell hole, he was targeted by enemy grenades. He threw 8 live grenades back at the enemy, but a 9th exploded in his hand, killing him instantly. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor: https://f3.social/6ycn
