In April 1945, fascist dictator Benito Mussolini was captured by Italian partisans as he attempted to flee to Switzerland. He was executed, and his body was dumped in a public square in Milan. An angry crowd mutilated his body before it was hanged upside down. See photos of the aftermath in our US Air Force photo collection on Fold3: https://f3.social/6ydb

After 84 years, a hero is returning home to New Mexico. Cpl. Richard A. Veal was captured when Japan invaded the Philippines during WWII. He survived the brutal Bataan Death March but passed away while imprisoned in the Cabanatuan POW Camp on December 27, 1942. Recently, the DPAA positively identified Veal's remains, which had been buried in a common grave. Today Cpl. Beal will be buried in Santa Fe. https://f3.social/6ydd

In December 1943, five men took off from Ladd Field in Alaska. A short time later, their plane plummeted to earth, and Lt. Leon Crane was the sole survivor. He survived 81 grueling days in temperatures plummeting to -40ºF. His survival is a story of true grit! Read about it on our blog: https://f3.social/6yd9

During WWII, baseball was a great way for troops to blow off steam between combat missions. "Corbin's Invaders" were named in honor of the 386th Bomb Group's commanding officer, Col. Thomas Corbin. Games could be highly competitive and drew hundreds of spectators. https://f3.social/6yd8

On April 18, 1942, sixteen B-25 bombers did something everyone thought was impossible: they took off from the deck of the USS Hornet—a runway far too short for heavy bombers—and headed straight for Tokyo.

Led by the legendary Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle, these 80 men knew they didn't have enough fuel to make it back. It wasn't about the physical damage caused; it was about the message sent. Pictured here are surviving members of Doolittle's Raiders at a 1947 reunion: https://f3.social/6yd7

Revolutionary War veteran Prymus Tyng was a Black soldier who fought with George Washington and witnessed Burgoyne's surrender. Amazingly, his pension file lists his parents' names, noting that his mother was a native of "Guinea in Africa."

Did you know that during WWII, Luxembourg’s railway heart was a primary Allied target?

To cripple the N**i war machine, Allied bombers focused on the Luxembourg City marshalling yards. These "Gare" raids were a double-edged sword: they successfully cut off German reinforcements and supplies heading to the front, but they also left deep scars on the city and its people. https://f3.social/6yd4

On this day, 161 years ago, the quiet village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia, became the stage for one of the most poignant moments in American history. Confederate General Robert E. Lee, realizing his exhausted troops could no longer hold out, surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, ending the Civil War.

Pictured here is the McLean house, where the surrender occurred. At least 620,000 died during the war (though some scholars believe it was as high as 850,000). https://f3.social/6yd3

On April 7, 1943, 1st Lt. James Swett of the USMC performed the unthinkable over the Solomon Islands. Leading a division of just four planes against a massive wave of 150 enemy aircraft, Swett dove into the fray and personally took down three bombers in his first pass.

But he wasn't done. After getting separated from his team, he engaged six more bombers alone. He shot down four in flames before running out of ammunition on the fifth. Despite a shattered windscreen, a disabled engine, and facial wounds, he skillfully ditched his battered Wildcat in the ocean and survived.

For his extraordinary heroism and "tenacious fighting spirit," 1st Lt. Swett was awarded the Medal of Honor. https://f3.social/6yd2
