(558)

Fold3 provides convenient access to US military records, including the stories, photos, and personal documents of the men and women who served. The Fold3 name comes from a traditional flag folding ceremony in which the third fold is made in honor and remembrance of veterans who served in defense of their country and to maintain peace throughout the world. Original records at Fold3 help you discover and share stories about these everyday heroes, forgotten soldiers, and the families that supported them. On Fold3, you can combine records found on the site with what you have in your own albums and shoeboxes to create an online memorial for someone who served.

During a brutal house-to-house battle in Oberhoffen, France, in February 1945, Sgt. Emile Deleau repeatedly risked everything to protect his squad. Facing heavy machine-gun fire, he advanced solo across open ground to clear enemy strongpoints with gr***des and his submachine gun. While attempting to knock out a final enemy position, he was killed in action and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor: https://f3.social/6ycg

As US infantry closed in during February 1945, retreating Germans realized they couldn't hold the line. Their solution? Turning the landscape into a weapon. German engineers blew open the discharge valves of the massive Schwammenauel Dam, flooding the Roer River Valley. This aerial photo was captured a few hours after the flood. The valley was turned into a muddy marsh, delaying the US Ninth Army's crossing by two weeks. https://f3.social/6ycf

Only 22% of Civil War widows' pensions are digitized. So finding this file for John Porter of the 9th US Colored Troops is a real glimpse into history! Porter died of Cholera in Texas in 1866, but his pension file keeps his family's memories alive. It reveals marriage details and his children's names and birthdates. Pension files are among our favorite records for learning about a veteran's family history. See Porter's file here: https://f3.social/6ycd

Imagine a POW camp built for 10,000. Now, imagine cramming more than 110,000 people into the same space. By April 29, 1945, Stalag VII-A (Moosburg) had become N**i Germany's largest POW camp. U.S. Air Corps and Ground Forces were packed in the camp, battling extreme overcrowding and dwindling rations. This photo captures newly liberated prisoners awaiting their turn to be evacuated by US 9th Troop Carriers. https://f3.social/6ycc

The Battle of Manila began 81 years ago today. This month-long battle reclaimed Manila from Japanese control, but also led to more than 100,000 civilian deaths and the loss of historical artifacts like the Intramuros (or ancient walled portion of the city). This WWII photo shows a navigator using a sextant. The sextant was the "GPS" of the time. Navigators looked through an eyepiece and used the sun (or moon) to give an altitude angle and create an artificial horizon. This early aerial navigation required patience and a lot of math. https://f3.social/6yca

On this day in 1967, a young Army medic showed the world the true meaning of "above and beyond."

When a neighboring platoon was pinned down by heavy fire in Vietnam, Sp4c. Donald W. Evans didn't wait for orders. He ran 100 meters through a "withering hail" of bullets and gr***des to reach his fallen brothers. Despite being wounded by gr***de fragments and weakened by blood loss, he refused to stop. He spent his final hours dragging soldiers to safety and administering aid, repeatedly ignoring his own pain to ensure others survived. He was killed while treating a fellow soldier and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor: https://f3.social/6yc7
