This makes me very sad. The federal government has it all wrong, in my opinion.

There are about 175,000 LPNs working in nursing homes — critical staff members who might no longer fit into the SNF job market if the proposed staffing rule is finalized as currently written.

Oh my goodness....I can't even tell you how many times I've read chart notes and said "HUH????". I recently saw a notation by a nurse that a resident was awake all night talking to "Robert". Now I knew that one of the housekeeping staff members was named Robert so I asked him whether he was in the building on night shift. He said no. I later learned that "Robert" was the name of a deceased brother of the resident. REALLY????

My nurse friends likely heard about this case and the recent jury verdict that is sending this nurse to jail. Full disclosure of medication errors by health care providers has always been a litigation risk; the risk has just increased exponentially. I predict this case will be referenced by many plaintiff attorneys.

Today will be marked in history for the entire nursing profession. If you think you will never or have never made a med error, you’re wrong. For people who think this verdict will make them safer in a hospital. Definitely wrong. Every time a nurse makes a med error now they will think twice about running to the doctor to tell them. They will remember they can be criminally charged. How many nurses do you think are going to feel comfortable admitting they made a mistake instead of keeping it to themselves. Every day nurses are asked to do MORE! We are the phlebotomist. We are the housekeepers. We are the IT department. We are maintenance. The list could go on for days. Now every day we walk into work we have to worry if we are going to do something that lands us in jail.

One of the services SharCare provides is monitoring medication orders at a client facility. Today I prevented a resident from receiving TWICE the normal dose of an antipsychotic medication! I alerted the facility after reviewing the prescription refill written by the psychiatrist requesting they inform the MD that the dose prescribed was twice the normal dose the resident has received for many years. He did not receive the double dose today, thank goodness! The prescription refill has been corrected.
