🌸 Fun Speech Activity: Flower Play! 🌼

Bring speech practice into springtime with this easy flower activity:

🌷 Pick a Flower & Talk!
Use real or pretend flowers and have your child:

• Name colors (“red flower,” “yellow flower”)
• Practice sounds (ex: “f” for flower, “b” for bloom)
• Make sentences (“I picked a pink flower”)
• Describe (big/small, soft, pretty)

💡 Make it interactive:
• Hide flowers around the room for a “flower hunt”
• Take turns picking and talking about each one
• Add actions like “smell the flower” or “give it to mom”

Learning through play makes speech practice natural and fun 🌿💛

Save this for a simple spring activity at home!

🧠 What Are Primitive Reflexes?

Primitive reflexes are automatic movements that babies are born with. As children grow, these reflexes should naturally fade and be replaced with more controlled movements.

When they don’t fully integrate, they can sometimes impact:

• Coordination and balance
• Handwriting and fine motor skills
• Attention and focus
• Body awareness
• Emotional regulation

👀 You might notice things like:
• Difficulty sitting still
• Awkward pencil grip
• Clumsiness or frequent tripping
• Trouble with posture

The good news? OT can help support development and integration through targeted activities and movement-based strategies 💪

🌱 Fun OT Activity: Gardening for Little Hands! 🌼

Gardening is a great way to build important skills while having fun outdoors!

Try this simple activity with your child:

🪴 Plant & Play
Let your child help dig, scoop, and plant flowers or seeds.

👉 This helps with:
• Fine motor skills (grasping, pinching, scooping)
• Hand strength (digging, squeezing soil)
• Bilateral coordination (using both hands together)
• Sensory exploration (touching dirt, water, textures)

💡 Make it extra fun:
• Use small tools or spoons for scooping
• Spray plants with a water bottle for hand strength
• Practice following directions (“put soil in the pot, then add the seed!”)

Learning + play + a little mess = the best kind of therapy 💛

Save this idea for a sunny day! ☀️🌷

Don’t Let Summer Undo Your Child’s Progress

Did you know kids can lose important skills over the summer when therapy routines stop? This is called the “summer slide.”

For children in speech and occupational therapy, this can look like:
🗣️ Using fewer words or struggling to communicate clearly
✋ Losing confidence with handwriting, self-care, or coordination
💛 Having a harder time with focus, behavior, or regulation

It’s not a setback—it’s just a lack of practice.

The key? Keep things simple and consistent 👇
✨ Talk, read, and play together every day
✨ Encourage independence (getting dressed, helping with tasks)
✨ Build skills into fun activities (games, crafts, outdoor play)

Summer speech and occupational therapy can be a great resource to keep you on track!

Because progress doesn’t have to pause for summer 🌈

📚 How Can Speech Therapy Help with Reading?

Many people are surprised to learn that speech therapy plays a BIG role in reading success.

Reading isn’t just about seeing words—it’s about understanding and processing language 🧠

🗣️ Speech therapists help build the foundation for reading by working on:
✨ Sound awareness (phonological awareness)
✨ Understanding how sounds connect to letters
✨ Vocabulary and word meanings
✨ Listening and comprehension skills
✨ Sentence structure and storytelling

If a child struggles with:
➡️ Sounding out words
➡️ Understanding what they read
➡️ Following stories or directions

Speech therapy can help strengthen those skills step by step 💡

Early support can make reading easier, more confident, and even enjoyable!

Because strong language skills = strong readers 📖💬
