🧠 What Is Executive Functioning — and How Can SLPs & OTs Help?
Executive functioning is like the brain’s “control center.” It helps us plan, focus, remember information, and manage emotions and actions to reach goals.
These skills include things like:
✨ Organizing and planning ahead
✨ Remembering steps in a task
✨ Managing time and attention
✨ Controlling impulses and emotions
✨ Flexibly adapting when things change
When executive functioning is challenging, daily tasks — like getting ready for school, following directions, or finishing homework — can feel overwhelming.
That’s where Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Occupational Therapists (OTs) come in!
🗣️ SLPs help strengthen attention, working memory, problem-solving, and communication — all key parts of executive functioning.
👐 OTs focus on sensory processing, regulation, and practical organization skills that make routines smoother and more independent.
💡 Together, they support children (and adults!) in building the skills needed to plan, focus, and thrive every day.
Small changes and consistent strategies can make a big difference! 💫
