Q: How is pleuran different from other beta glucans?

A: Pleuran is a beta glucan unique to oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus). Unlike beta glucans from other sources, the insoluble structure of pleuran means that it is not absorbed, but rather passes through the digestive system intact, and is recognized by receptors on immune cells in the small intestine called Peyer’s patches.*
