All of us here at NVRH are so happy that this goodest boy is doing well! As of today, he is fully recovered and ready to get back to duty 🐾 👮🏼‍♀️

On the evening of January 25th, around 2100 hours, K9 Gero began exhibiting severe stomach pain. Recognizing that his behavior and body language were off, his handler, Sr. Ptlm. Brandon Walters, rushed him to the emergency vet. Gero was immediately provided with care, leading to the discovery of a foreign object in his large intestine.

After 8.5 hours of evaluation, the on-duty vet and Sr. Ptlm. Walters decided to monitor Gero overnight, hoping the object would pass naturally, with surgery as a possible option in the morning.

On January 26th, around 1100 hours, it became evident that the object was not moving, and surgery was deemed necessary. The procedure was successful, and Gero was ready to return home on Wednesday, January 29th, with a 10-to 14-day exercise restriction, preventing him from performing his patrol duties.

During this time, Sr. Ptlm. Walters reached out to a non-profit organization that assists police departments in emergencies like this. Irondog K9 International graciously stepped in to help cover Gero’s veterinary bills! Please consider donating to this amazing organization at http://irondogk9intl.org/donate/

Sr. Ptlm. Walters would like to extend his deepest gratitude to Northeast Veterinary Referral Hospital for the exceptional care they provided to Gero during his time of need. He also extends his heartfelt thanks to Mitzi and Charlie Nash of IronDog K9 International—your support has been incredible. Lastly, a sincere thank you to the countless people who reached out during this unsettling and stressful time!

After a long two weeks, K9 Gero had his 15+ staples removed and has been cleared for duty!!

Many pet owners don’t realize that there are
specialists in veterinary medicine similar to human medicine 🐾🩺💊

Sometimes a consultation with a Veterinary Internist is recommended by your primary care veterinarian for further evaluation and advanced treatment for your pet. Internists specialize in diagnosing and treating complex diseases of the immune, cardiovascular, pulmonary, urinary, gastrointestinal and endocrine systems.

Dr. Robert Runde, VMD is our Internal Medicine Specialist at NVRH in Plains, Pennsylvania. He uses advanced imaging including ultrasound, CT Scans, barium studies and even intravenous pyelograms (IVPs) in conjunction with performing various procedures such as endoscopy, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, colonoscopy, cystoscopy, tru cut biopsies and more!
The Internal Medicine Department also offers chemotherapy services and I-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism in cats.

What to expect when your pet is referred to our Internal Medicine Department:
- Make an appointment by giving our hospital a call and letting us know which veterinarian referred your pet and why.
- Be sure your primary care vet’s office forwards us all medical records including blood chemistries and radiographs if performed.
- For pets referred for an ultrasound, make sure your pet is fasted 4-6 hours prior to the appointment. If your pet is on any medications that must be given with food, let our staff know and they will be happy to advise you with directions!
- Have handy the names of ALL medications your pet is currently taking (including dosages).

Appointments with our Internal Medicine Department are available Monday through Thursday 8:30am to 3pm. To schedule, contact our clients service representatives at 570-208-8877.

Pet Corner of the Week: Max 🐾🤍

Max is a 10 year old Labradoodle undergoing chemotherapy treatment for Stage 4 B-Cell Lymphoma/Lymphosarcoma.

He presented through the Internal Medicine Department back in June of this year for generalized lymphadenopathy, or enlarged lymph nodes/glands. These glands are located throughout the entire body and are an integral part of the immune system. There are 5 sets of lymph nodes you are able to palpate/feel. These are:
- submandibular (either side of neck under jaw)
- pre-scapular/cervical (near shoulder blades)
- axillary (armpit)
- inguinal (groin)
- popliteal (back of stifle, or knee)

The most noticeable enlarged lymph nodes are usually the submandibular and popliteal. It is always a great idea to perform frequent checks even at home!

There are various reasons for lymphadenopathy, but the 2 most common reasons are infection or cancer.

A full workup including bloodwork, chest radiographs, ultrasound and fine needle aspirates is necessary to diagnose lymphoma. Sometimes pathologists are unable to definitively make a diagnosis based on cytologies alone, so additional testing as well as biopsies and further imaging may also be recommended.

After Max was diagnosed with lymphoma and therapy options were discussed, his family elected to pursue chemotherapy treatment though NVRH with Dr. Runde. Although cancer is not fully curable, chemotherapy can allow pets to go into remission.

Max may look like a completely new dog since he experienced some hair loss, but his new golden coat matches his radiant personality ✨

Max has completed 2 cycles of chemotherapy and is patiently awaiting to celebrate Halloween this year 🎃

In the midst of National Veterinary Technician Week, two members of our team participated in Johnson College’s Fall Student/Alumni Career Fair in hopes to recruit more staff members!

Both team members are graduates of Johnson College’s Veterinary Nursing program! Ashlyn (left) is our ER Department’s Supervisor, and Melissa (right) is our Training Coordinator.

They had a great time meeting and speaking to students and fellow alumni, as well as seeing industry partners!
