Baby Begin was started by Jennifer Todd-Barnard, OTR out of a passion to educate families on how to keep their new baby's head round. She has been a pediatric Occupational Therapist for 15 years. For the past eight years, she has been involved in treating infants with plagiocephaly (misshapen head) and torticollis (tight neck). She worked for Cranial Technologies, Inc., which is the leading provider of cranial molding helmets. She has treated thousands of patients and has been actively involved in educating physicians, families and other therapists in the community. Jennifer possesses the unmatched experience and knowledge about this common and often preventable condition. There is a very small window of opportunity to affect babies and their head shape. Jennifer is dedicated to educating parents and physicians alike on how to minimize the risk of plagiocephaly. Skull deformities have numerous medical and social implications. She would like to see every baby have the opportunity to begin life with a beautiful round head!

Have you ever noticed any of these in your baby and thought to yourself “that doesn’t seem right”? Well odds are, you’re right! Torticollis starts in the neck but affects the entire body leading to potential gross motor delays or asymmetries. If you think your baby is experiencing Torticollis, reach out to a pediatric OT or PT to have them evaluated. The sooner you intervene, the better!

When a baby has Torticollis, one side of the neck has a tight muscle! This tight muscle causes baby to have difficulty fully rotating their head (chin over shoulder) to their non-preferred side. When they attempt looking that direction on their own, they tend to lift the opposite shoulder to compensate for their neck tightness. By gently holding down that opposite shoulder, you’re preventing baby from compensating and providing a gentle neck stretch!

‼️It’s important to note, if you suspect your baby has Torticollis, you need to seek invention from a pediatric occupational or physical therapist before beginning stretches! It’s important to figure out which side of the neck is tight and to have an individualized plan for your baby.

Knowledge is power 💡 Whether you’re currently pregnant, have a newborn, work with infants everyday… this info applies to YOU! The first 4 months are crucial to a baby’s head shape. If you’re able to spot a turn preference and flat spot within those first few months and you seek intervention, your baby will most likely have pretty good results- and maybe without a helmet if you use a Baby Begin therapist!

One of the biggest reasons babies skip crawling is because they never learn transitional movements. Transitional movements are the in between of a baby getting from their back ➡️ to their belly ➡️ to hands and knees and/or sitting ➡️ then to standing. When you place your baby directly into sitting, they’re never having to learn how to get into sitting AND are much less likely to attempt to get out of sitting causing a “happy sitter” (a baby who loves to sit and wants to skip crawling). Let your new rule of thumb be: ALWAYS place baby on their back on the floor. Let them roll to their belly and problem solve where they want to go from there!

If your baby doesn’t enjoy tummy time, check their arms! Are their elbows propped? If not, they don’t have enough support to be able to lift their head and engage with their surroundings which could lead to some discomfort. Prop the elbows and see what a difference it makes- we have a feeling your baby will love tummy time!
