When Jon Montgomery needed a kidney and a liver transplant, his sons offered to be his donors — now they're grateful to be able to spend the holiday together. Both brothers emphasize that their dad did not ask them for anything — becoming a donor was something they wanted to do.
“There was no question," Christopher, a 24-year-old dental student at the University of Pittsburgh. "I want to keep him around as long as I can...I want him to know my children. I couldn't imagine life without him."
Both brothers are thankful that they matched their dad.
A life-saving double transplant was performed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
“They're a very remarkable family,” says Dr. Abhinav Humar, Chief of Transplantation at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “A very close-knit family where the sons are obviously willing to do anything for their father.”
A lot to be thankful for!

A new smartphone-enabled test provides people at risk of chronic kidney disease the ability to monitor their kidney health from the comfort of their own homes.
The Minuteful Kidney test uses a smartphone camera to look for the presence of a specific protein in the urine called albumin.
This is the first time the FDA has granted clearance for this kind of smartphone-enabled test, also known as the albumin to creatinine ratio. (uACR)

If you needed more justification to start your day with a cup of joe, a new study by Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers found that drinking at least one cup of coffee daily may lower the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) as compared to those who don’t.
The results, which were recently published in the journal Kidney International Reports, revealed that daily coffee consumption was associated with a 15 percent reduced risk of AKI, with the greatest decreases being seen in those who drank two to three cups (a 22 percent to 23 percent lower risk).

The best supplement for your kidneys? Water. 💦
“The cheapest treatment for the kidneys is water,” said Dr. Eladio Peñaranda, a nephrology consultant at Makati Medical Center, in a March 8 webinar organized by the Philippine College of Physicians and the Philippine Society of Nephrologists. While the advice to drink eight glasses of water a day is a reasonable goal, individual water needs depend on several factors, including height, exercise, environment, and overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, adequate daily fluid intake — on average — is 15.5 cups or 3.7 liters of fluids a day for adult men, and 11.5 cups or 2.7 liters of fluids a day for adult women.
Two indicators of adequate fluid intake, the researchers added, are a colorless or light-yellow urine, and seldom feeling thirst.
