You may hear your doctor mention PAD or PVD—but what do those terms mean?
PVD (Peripheral Vascular Disease) is a broad term for conditions that affect blood vessels outside the heart and brain, such as veins and arteries in your legs.
PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease) is the most common type of PVD. It happens when plaque builds up in the arteries, reducing blood flow—often causing leg pain, cramping, or numbness when walking.
Think of it this way: PAD is a type of PVD. If you've been told you have PAD, it means your arteries are specifically affected.
