Claudication is muscle pain, cramping, or fatigue, most often in the legs, that occurs during walking or exercise and improves with rest. It’s a common symptom of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), conditions caused by narrowed or blocked arteries that limit blood flow to the limbs.

This pain isn't just a leg issue—it’s a warning sign of poor circulation and increased risk for serious problems like non-healing wounds, infection, heart attack, and stroke. Many people dismiss claudication as “just getting older,” but ignoring it can allow vascular disease to progress.

If you notice leg pain while walking, heaviness, numbness, or slowed wound healing, it’s important to get evaluated. Catching PAD or PVD early can help protect your mobility, your limbs, and your heart.

A temporal artery biopsy is a minor surgical procedure used to diagnose giant cell arteritis (GCA), a condition that causes inflammation of the arteries, often affecting blood flow to the head and eyes. Early diagnosis is critical, as untreated GCA can lead to vision loss or stroke.

During the procedure, a small section of the temporal artery (located near the temple) is removed and examined under a microscope for signs of inflammation. It’s typically done under local anesthesia, is well tolerated, and usually takes less than an hour.

If you’re experiencing symptoms like persistent headaches, scalp tenderness, jaw pain while chewing, or vision changes, a temporal artery biopsy can provide clear answers and guide timely treatment.

Genicular Artery Embolization (G*E) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. It works by reducing abnormal blood flow to the inflamed areas of the knee that drive pain and swelling.

During G*E, a tiny catheter is guided to the genicular arteries, where small particles are used to block excessive blood flow linked to inflammation, without affecting healthy tissue. The result can be reduced pain, improved mobility, and faster recovery compared to surgery.

G*E is an outpatient procedure and may be an ideal option for patients who haven’t found relief with physical therapy, injections, or medications.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) happens when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to your legs. Many people don't realize they have it at first—but there are signs to watch for.

Common symptoms include:
• Leg pain, cramping, or fatigue when walking
• Numbness, weakness, or a “heavy” feeling in the legs
• Coldness in one leg or foot
• Slow-healing sores on the toes, feet, or legs
• Shiny skin or loss of hair on the legs
• Weak or absent pulses in the feet

PAD can also be completely silent—meaning no symptoms at all. That’s why people with risk factors (such as smoking history, diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol) should talk with a physician about whether screening is appropriate.

👉 If you're noticing leg discomfort or changes in circulation, don't ignore it. Call Champlain Valley Vascular to schedule a consultation: (518) 562-7557

While many aneurysms don't cause symptoms until they grow or rupture, understanding these warning signs can help you act quickly if something feels off.

👉 If you or a loved one experiences sudden, severe symptoms, seek emergency medical care right away.
👉 For those at higher risk—such as individuals with a family history, high blood pressure, or smoking history—speak with your physician about whether screening is appropriate.
