Anticipate And Problem Solve – Children usually respond to problems in three ways – deny, act impulsively/aggressively, or search for a solution. Parents can help children by reviewing possible situations beforehand. Start positively – talk about the great new things that your child will get to do this year. As a stress coach, help children find the appropriate strategies to address these types of difficulties.

Set Up Predictable Schedules – Prepare for homework. When will it be done? Where will it be done? Guide children towards selecting a regular time and an appropriate place for learning. Place a calendar of all activities, events, and chores on a wall or fridge so that the child can look ahead and know what to expect. Predictability helps to relieve anxieties around separation or change.

Be A Supportive Role Model – Be aware of your child’s self-talk and self-perception. Counteract any negativity and self-doubt with positive affirmations and recounts of their abilities. Remind them of their support circle. Remind them of who they can talk to, ask for help from, vent to, question, and share with. But most of all – Take care of yourself, as you are a special gift to them!

Stress is often defined as a feeling of being “out of control.” Most of us can recognize stress when it’s obvious, such as the body’s reaction to too much to do, excessive worry over money or illness, or emotional trauma over a death or job loss.

The next time you feel stressed, stop and think about what will help you move through it in the healthiest way possible.

It’s the more subtle stressors of everyday life that tend to run us down physically and mentally. Our bodies respond to stress by increasing blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, metabolism and blood flow to the muscles.

Some stress is actually good. It can help you energize for an exam, work deadline or event. Stress becomes harmful when it builds up and causes health problems ranging from minor aches and pains to more serious issues.

Our message of the day is to not let stress ruin your day. If you feel stressed or you need someone to talk to, feel free to give us a call at 248-617-0440. We would love to chat.

For teachers, January is not the start of the new year. It's September, a time spent preparing for and starting the new academic year. And it's a time balanced by high levels of excitement at the prospect of a new start and stress about everything that lies ahead.

Teachers are concerned about managing students' multitude of learning styles, meeting standards, evaluation systems, Common Core concerns, and for some, teaching a new grade, a new curriculum, or even at a new school. Changes in leadership or colleagues can create uncertainty with expectations.

The best way teachers can deal with this stress is to identify the source. We don't expect you to figure this all out on your own, and Mind Wellness Counseling is here to lend a hand. If you feel in need of any specialized counseling or therapy services, feel free to give us a call or set up a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

Back-to-school is an exciting time, even if you've been teaching for decades. Sure, you're excited to welcome a new class of students, but getting back to class may also bring first-day butterflies, stress and concerns about your ability to groom successful learners.

And with an ever-changing group of clientele, it's no wonder 61 percent of educators report their work as "always" or "often" stressful.

Teachers, for all that you do in the classroom and for our students, it's important to take some time to care for yourself. Our lineup of professionals and services is here to provide you with wellness and guidance you may need at any time during the school year.

Discover Your True Potential

Everyone has the capacity to discover their true potential. One of my favorite quotes is “Your past is not your potential. In any hour you can choose to liberate the future.” —Marilyn Ferguson. At any time, we can tap into that inner wisdom that tells us that we can do better going forward. But, what often happens is that we get stuck in a thought or memory from the past or we begin to worry about the future. Often the rumination’s about the future have no factual basis. They are merely story lines that create uncertainty.

When we can learn to show up powerfully in the present moment, then we can truly begin to realize our true potential. Inevitably, life will show up and throw us a curve ball from time to time. Whether it be sadness, stress, divorce, trauma, loss, addiction or any other number of issues. At Mind Wellness, I ally with people to navigate through these difficult circumstances and develop resiliency for the future utilizing mindfulness and other evidenced based modalities. Through a collaborative process, we work together to help you discover your true potential and live with passion and purpose.
