I am so happy to announce that starting *TODAY* April 13th, students interested in learning mindfulness and meditation can now attend a full week of online classes for FREE. The move comes after some much needed resources for those seeking stress management to experience effective, long lasting solutions. We’ve all been affected by the pandemic in such a huge way, and that has caused us to adapt the ways we handle the hard stuff.

*New and Returning students are eligible to attend classes for free!*

Classes are open to all levels of experience, including newbies. The Beginner’s Mind class is a great place to start for someone who wants to learn the fundamentals. The Inner Wisdom class uses guided meditation to tap into the innate wisdom and knowledge we all have available to us. The Morning Mindfulness class is a great way to start your day mindfully. For those who would like to join a Loving-Kindness class, Studio for Mindfulness offers a complimentary World Peace Meditation every Tuesday.

Studio for Mindfulness is a boutique meditation studio that offers solutions for every aspect of your life, including group classes, private sessions, and corporate options. Services are currently being held virtually through the zoom platform. Students interested in receiving their free week of classes should visit our free week page to register.

Are we there yet?

I think the answer is “NO.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream where his children would be judged on the content of their character, not the color of their skin. He also knew that fear is based in the unknown and that the only way to bridge that gap is through communication. So today I urge you, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and all of the many, many civil rights leaders big and small, to actively work to eradicate fear, reach out to one another and communicate. Communication leads to peace. Peace leads to love.

Meditation: the four basic elements:
1. A quiet environment- one must “turn off” not only internal stimuli but external distractions.
2. An object to dwell upon- this object may be a word or sound repetition, gazing at a symbol, concentrating on a particular feeling.
3. A passive attitude- thoughts, imagery, feelings may drift into one’s awareness. One should not concentrate on these perceptions but allow them to pass on. A person should not be concerned with how well she or he is doing.
4. A comfortable position- one should be in a comfortable posture that will allow the individual to remain for at least twenty minutes.

Excerpt from The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson. (1975 Avon Books).

LIVE! Tonight at 5:30 join us here on instagram for World Peace Meditation with .living . We will be practicing Metta mediation, or loving-kindness

🕉

Metta Meditation is a type of Buddhist meditation that focuses on the wish of good will for yourself and for others. Metta, or Loving-Kindness, is the practice of developing our capacity for experiencing loving-kindness.

🕉

It’s not necessarily feeling love or kindness for yourself or others. It’s about meditating on your intention, no matter how weak or strong they might be.

🕉

As we continue to practice this intention, our ability to feel the sensation of love and kindness for ourselves and others can grow to be very powerful. The word Metta is derived from the Pali word mitta, meaning friend.

🕉

From time to time, as we are opening and softening our hearts, pain, guilt, sorrow and grief can come out. This is just a cue to what has been held in there. There is no need to judge these feelings, but accept and acknowledge them. And if you can, send these feelings well wishes.

🕉

This meditation can evoke deep feelings of friendship, warmth, compassion for those we share our humanity with. (resource: The issue at hand. Gil Fronsdal. 2001. via insightmeditationcenter.com)

Meditation and mindfulness can take several forms and is different for everyone. One’s practice will change and evolve over time. At times, your practice may include not practicing for a long time... and that’s ok!

I started my routine when I was very young and on accident (read more about this story in my blog!) but suffice to say, it has changed over the years. Today, this is my practice:

1. Morning Meditation: I don’t want to start from a place of anxiety or frustration, so I’ll do my meditation before I get out of bed. I start with a body scan to release all of my body’s physical tension. Then, I’ll imagine any emotional or mental stressors in front of me attached by a cord. Then I imagine this cord dissolving. I learned this one from one of my favorite teachers Karen Piiranen. Then, I imagine myself surrounded with bright light like I’m in a glowing globe of protection. Now I’m ready to start my day!

2. Midday Mindfulness: I like to do a short breathing exercise after lunch or whenever I am in a stressful circumstance. Most of the time I do this at my desk and close my eyes for a moment. I like the 4-7-8 breathing exercise the most, I think.

3. Evening Yoga: Most days after work I will take about 35-50 minutes to do some yoga. I really focus on aligning my movement with my breath. I have too many favorite teachers to name!

4. End of Day Reflection: I always like to reflect on my day and think of everything that happened. Sometimes I will journal my experiences, other times I will just think about it. I will ask myself questions such as: What did I do to help others today? How did others help me? What did I do to make things difficult for others?

This is my current mindfulness routine, but it is always changing and evolving. What’s one thing you do each day to be mindful? Share with us below!

We've all heard of burnout. In fact, many of us have experienced burnout at some point in our life. It's the exhaustion, the disengagement, it's the apathy. But, have you heard of "compassion fatigue?". If you're like most people, you enjoy helping and giving to others when they are in need. But, at times this can come at a cost to you and your wellbeing. [ 45 more words ]

Although I didn't know that what I was doing at the time was meditation, I started meditating when I was a very young person. I didn't know exactly what I was doing, I just knew that I liked to go inside my head to relax and because it was interesting (I later learned what I thought was a weird habit was actually meditation!).
