Brushing regularly is vital for healthy teeth and gums, but yes, you can actually overdo a good thing. Over-brushing can lead to sensitive teeth and receding gums.

When you brush too hard or too much, you can wear down the outer layer of your teeth. Lost enamel means less protective coating for your teeth, which can cause your teeth to become sensitive to hot and cold.

Brushing hard also damages tender gum tissue and can eventually cause it to recede, exposing sensitive tooth roots and leaving them vulnerable to periodontal disease and decay.

Those most at risk for tooth or gum damage from overbrushing are those who brush too vigorously using medium or hard-bristled toothbrushes. What are some signs to look for that may indicate you are over-brushing?

๐Ÿ‘Ž Splayed bristles on your toothbrush
๐Ÿง Swollen or red gums after brushing
๐Ÿ˜ซ Bleeding gums
๐Ÿ˜ฌ Gum recession

The aim of brushing your teeth is to remove plaque, the white sticky material which causes decay. To remove plaque, itโ€™s good brushing technique that matters most, rather than brushing hard.

If you somehow find yourself without a toothbrush but really feel your mouth asking for help, studies have shown that chewing sugar-free gum after meals and snacks can help!

Youโ€™ve probably heard this before, but maybe not how it actually works, so hereโ€™s a brief explainer on the main points.

๐Ÿ˜ Sugarless gum helps rinse off and neutralize the acids released by the bacteria in plaque, which are harmful to tooth enamel.

๐Ÿ˜ The act of chewing and the flavor of the artificial sweeteners in gum also stimulate ten times the normal rate of saliva flow. Not only does the increased saliva flow neutralize the acids in your mouth, it also helps wash away food particles.

๐Ÿ˜ Sugar-free gum sweetened with xylitol is what you need to look for. In the presence of xylitol, the bacteria most associated with forming cavities loses the ability to adhere to the tooth.

One disclaimer thatโ€™s vitally important and hopefully obvious: sugarless gum is helpful in pinch, but itโ€™s not an actual replacement for proper dental care. You still need to properly brush twice a day and clean in between your teeth with floss at least once a day to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Plaque-creating bacteria take 4-12 hours to develop. Thus, flossing more than once a day really has no benefits unless you have something stuck in your teeth. And if you're flossing the wrong way more than once a day, you can actually do some damage to your gums.

Flossing too harshly too often can harm the gum line and expose more of your toothโ€™s root. Thatโ€™s not only painful, it also creates an opening for bacteria to creep in and cause cavities or decay.

What is flossing too harshly?

One common mistake is flossing your gums instead of your teeth. Flossing is supposed to rub plaque off the hard-to-reach crevices between teeth. The purpose is to move plaque away from your gums, not into them.

Sour candy can be almost TWICE as bad for your teeth as other types. In addition to the large amount of sugar found in all candy:

๐ŸŽƒ Sour candy has more acid. ๐ŸŽƒ

Malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, and fumaric acid. These are all in most sour candies, and they are brutal on your teeth's enamel.

๐ŸŽƒ Sticky candies will...stick. ๐ŸŽƒ

Brush and floss as soon as possible after eating those sticky sour candies - once their remnants take hold, they're going to stay there, getting to work on your enamel.

If youโ€™re a lover of candy corn, weโ€™re sorry to inform you that itโ€™s pretty much the worst possible candy for your teeth. Itโ€™s essentially pure sugar, which means there are no other ingredients to help get the sugar out of your mouth.

This allows the sugar to sit on your teeth longer. If you love candy corn, go ahead and indulge, but keep your brushing and flossing supplies nearby and ready. ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŽƒ

Gel or paste? Is there a real difference for toothbrushing success? Is one better?

The good news is that whichever you prefer, both types of toothpaste are recommended and completely safe for everyday use. More important than gel vs paste is looking at the fluoride content, ie make sure your brand has fluoride. (Some varieties are marketed without fluoride. The benefit of frequent exposure to fluoride for enamel strength is indisputable.)

Another thing to consider is toothpaste varieties branded as โ€œwhiteningโ€. These pastes (and gels) marketed for their "whitening" effect tend to be more efficient at removing stain but also can be more abrasive. If you have more sensitivity in your teeth you should likely consider avoiding the whitening types of toothpaste. If this is you, consider selecting a basic paste or gel, even an anti-sensitivity brand like Sensodyne.

Any questions on your toothpaste? Message or comment me with a pic and Iโ€™ll let you know what I think.
