Choking in the Elderly: Be Prepared to Save a Life
Choking is a life-threatening emergency, especially among seniors with swallowing difficulties or medical conditions. As caregivers, recognizing the signs and knowing how to respond can make all the difference.
If the person is conscious and showing signs of severe airway obstruction:
π¨ Look for:
Inability to breathe, speak, or cough
Clutching the throat β the universal sign of choking
Signs of panic or blue discoloration of the lips or face
Act quickly: Perform the Heimlich maneuver (abdominal thrusts):
Stand behind the person.
Place your fist just above the navel (belly button).
Grasp your fist with your other hand.
Deliver quick, inward and upward thrusts.
Repeat until the object is expelled or the person becomes unresponsive.
If the person is too large or pregnant, perform chest thrusts instead:
Place your hands on the center of the chest, just above the lowest ribs.
Press hard and fast with quick thrusts.
Repeat until the obstruction is cleared.
If the person becomes unresponsive:
π Call 911 immediately and get an AED if available. Put the phone on speaker.
π§ββοΈ Lower the person to the ground and begin CPR, starting with chest compressions.
π¨ After every 30 compressions, check for the object in the mouth. If visible, remove it carefully β never perform a blind finger sweep.
π Continue CPR until the person recovers or emergency help arrives.
Important tips:
β
If the person can cough forcefully or speak, do not interfere β encourage them to keep coughing.
β
Always be ready to act if their condition worsens.
β
If youβre alone and choking, call 911 and give yourself abdominal thrusts.
