You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

A Q&A with Local Mental Health Counselor Daniel R. Tura, LMHC
By Jim Hanna, Kingston Living

When it comes to mental health, knowing that trusted, experienced support is available close to home can make all the difference. For many local residents, taking the first step toward therapy begins with finding a professional who understands both the challenges of everyday life and the importance of a comfortable, judgment-free environment.

Daniel R. Tura, M.Ed., LMHC, is a licensed mental health counselor serving the South Shore and surrounding communities. With decades of experience working with individuals and couples, Dan helps clients manage stress, anxiety, anger management, relationship challenges, and major life transitions using practical, real-world tools that extend well beyond the therapy session.
We sat down with Dan to talk about what brings people to therapy, the common struggles he sees today, and how counseling can help people move forward with confidence and clarity.

Many people consider therapy but hesitate to make the first call. From your experience, what usually brings someone to finally reach out, and what do you want them to know before they do?

Most people are shy about therapy because they feel like they failed at something, they are shy about asking for help, or they are scared of what it is going to be like. Sometimes it can take mounting issues to get people to reach out for help. Life is like a journey that we all are on, and sometimes along the way, struggles can occur. I believe that finding a good therapist shouldn’t be one of these struggles. If you reach out to me, you will be met with compassion, warmth, and experience. I will provide an atmosphere that is comfortable for you, and rest assured I will listen to you with no judgment. The only things I require from you are a desire to improve and complete honesty. I believe that trust is needed for growth to happen.

You’ve worked with clients across different life stages and challenges. Are there common themes you’re seeing right now in people’s mental health?

In today’s society, there are many pressures for a variety of reasons. A lot of my clients come to see me for their issues with excessive worrying, which can overlap with symptoms of depression. Also, I have noticed a common theme of relational and general communication issues with partners, spouses, and/or family members.

How would you describe your approach to therapy for someone who has never been in counseling before?

I would describe my therapy approach as client centered, with building a therapeutic rapport with my client being of the utmost importance. I will listen to my client without passing judgement, and will work with them to formulate a treatment plan that they can be comfortable with. I am well versed in a variety of modalities, so I am able to adapt to what will be most beneficial for you. For example, some of my clients prefer me to be more direct and lead the session, while others prefer to be validated and heard. Whatever is going to allow you to become the best version of yourself is what I will provide.

You emphasize practical tools alongside emotional insight. Can you share an example of how therapy can lead to real, everyday changes outside the session?

The work that we do in therapy can transfer outside of session. I will give you the tools in session that will be necessary for you to thrive outside of session. If we are working on you becoming more confident, I may challenge you to take that chance in a situation outside of the session. Then, in our next session, we can talk about how it went for you.

For someone reading this who feels stuck but isn’t sure therapy is for them, what would you say?

For those in need of help but who are reluctant to reach out or aren’t sure if therapy will work for them, I understand. I understand that therapy can be awkward or scary for some, and my hope is that you just make that call, because once we begin talking about your issues, I am confident you will want to continue. If you take that first step, not only will you benefit from it, but so will the others you surround yourself with on a daily basis.

For example, I was working with a client who suffered with extreme anxiety. I worked with this client by educating her on the coping skills of mindfulness and distress intolerance skills. I asked her to utilize these skills outside of session, and over time she was able to lessen the power of the anxiety that was crippling her.
