Ginger truly is a powerhouse food! Learn more about it today from Dr. Elizabeth!

Whether you’re using it as a ground spice, fresh in a recipe, steeped in a tea, or as an essential oil - you’re reaping some major health benefits.

A lot of ginger’s power comes from its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Here are a few health benefits of ginger: 

— Helps with nausea and morning sickness 
— Relieves bloating
— Helps ease menstrual cramps & pain
— Contains anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties to boost the immune system
— Has anti-cancer properties (thanks 6-gingerol!) 
— Helps to regulate blood sugar and lower cholesterol
— Can relieve muscle and joint pain

— Helps aid in smoother digestive processes

One of my family’s favorite way to eat ginger is in kombucha (other great digestive and probiotic benefits there!!) or in homemade ramen soup.

Did you know that food plays a critical role in a strong immune system? Here are our top tips to ensure you stay strong and healthy all season long!

1. Water, Water, Water: Drink your water!! Your immune system is carried around by lymph. In order to create lymph and keep it abundantly flowing, you MUST consume adequate amounts of water daily. Ideally, you would drink half your body weight in ounces per day (if you weigh 120 pounds, this means your goal should be 60 oz of water daily).

2. Ditch the Sugar: Sugar spikes inflammation and suppresses the immune system. Reducing sugar as much as you can will ensure you have an iron clad immune system all winter long! If your body is fighting off a virus, don’t add sugar back in to your diet until you’ve felt better for at least 4 days. If a recipe calls for sugar, try RAW local honey instead for its anti-microbial properties. Contrary to popular belief: Just be sure not to mix it in to hot tea or other hot liquids, as the heat destroys the beneficial enzymes, antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients.

3. Onions & Garlic in Everything: From sauces to dips, roasted veggies and more - get those onions & garlic in your meals! Onions and garlic not only add incredible flavor, but they are antimicrobial and can suppress viruses, which then decreases the viral load on your body and allows your immune system to work more effectively.

4. Ginger & Turmeric: Both of these naturally reduce inflammation, which keeps the immune system strong. We love raw ginger in smoothies or turmeric added to soups & stews. You can also take turmeric supplements, which we have available at Revolution.

5. Fresh Veggies & Fruit: Eat the rainbow of living foods! Living foods bring LIFE - they are packed with vitamins, antioxidants and phytonutrients, which are bodies need to stay healthy. Eating 6-8 servings a day will give your immune system the boost it needs!

Melatonin is your body’s natural “sleep hormone” — it helps signal when it’s time for your body to rest, and it is ESSENTIAL for good, quality sleep. This unique hormone is produced by the pineal gland, located in the middle of the brain, and functions with the rhythms of the sun. It rises in the evening to help you fall asleep and drops in the morning to wake you up.

Light exposure (especially from screens!) can suppress melatonin, making it harder to fall and stay asleep. 

Here are a few simple ways to naturally promote healthy melatonin levels:

— Prioritize natural light exposure in the mornings, ideally within 30-60 minutes of waking; this helps regulate your circadian rhythm, and allows you to be more alert during the day and properly trigger melatonin production at night

— Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day to create a consistent routine;

— As important as sunlight is, too much light at night, even dim light, can stop your body from releasing melatonin. To combat this, try keeping your room as dark as possible with blackout curtains. If this isn’t an option, consider trying a comfortable sleep mask.

— Work to decrease your stress: Did you know that cortisol is an antagonist to melatonin? This means that when your stress level is high, your melatonin level drops, which can cause difficulty falling and staying asleep.

— Drink 1 TBSP of Tart Cherry Juice in 6 oz of water approximately 1 hour before bed to promote natural melatonin production in your body; we are so excited to now be carrying Tart Cherry Juice by at Revolution!

— Avoid blue light in the evening; limiting exposure to screens from phones, tablets and TV for 1-2 hours before bed helps your body begin melatonin production naturally; blue light suppresses it.

— Eat melatonin-rich foods: Incorporate pistachios, walnuts, eggs and fish in to your diet regularly!

As the days get shorter & the seasons change, being exposed to less sunlight can impact the way we feel on a day to day basis. Have you ever noticed that you start to feel less motivated or energetic during this time of year?

Here are some ways to help combat those seasonal changes:

— Create a routine: Go to bed & get up at the same time every day and maintain a consistent schedule for your meals, exercise and activities; this stability helps your mind & body adjust more smoothly even if the environment or season is changing.

— Get daily sunlight: 15-20 minutes, ideally within an hour of waking. If this isn’t possible, try to do it by midday. This will help support your body’s circadian rhythm (natural wake/sleep cycle).

— Move daily: movement is a natural mood booster! Aim to do a form of moderate exercise for 20-30 minutes a day! Bonus: staying active outside also gets you that beneficial sunlight exposure!

— Supplement with vitamin D: 2,500-5,000 IU a day

— Eat a balanced diet: A diet rich in whole foods, including vegetables, fruits, protein and healthy fats, can support your mood and mental health. Try to limit processed foods and sugar as much as possible, as well as caffeine, which can contribute to elevated anxiety levels.

— Stay connected & in community: Isolation is damaging both to our minds & hearts, and extra support may be needed as the seasons change. Prioritize time with others - grab coffee, enjoy lunch, invite a few girlfriends for an afternoon walk or attend an event where you can be refreshed in community.
