Nutrition and Your Pelvic Floor:
* Getting adequate daily, dietary fiber (recommended 25-30 grams) will assist with stool health.
* Well formed bowel movements will reduce a feeling of straining while toileting. This may sound silly, but reducing the amount of strain during a bowel movement, has a protective effect on the pelvic floor. Decreased straining reduces the risk of pelvic organ prolapse.
* Pelvic floor muscle, is skeletal muscle like your hamstrings and biceps.
* Getting adequate protein in your diet is important to help build and strengthen muscle. It provides the amino acids that form the building blocks of muscle tissue.
* If you are working on strengthening the pelvic floor and other global muscle groups, being mindful of protein intake will be important to reaching your goals.

Last Thursday we held our first mat Pilates class!! Mat Pilates is another great way to work on body and breath awareness, core strength, and mobility. These classes will be held Thursdays at 10:15am. Each class is a small group setting of up to 4 people. This allows for focused attention on form and performance of each exercise.

Join us Thursday mornings at 10:15am for Mat Pilates!! We will be adding these small group classes Thursday mornings starting September 18.

Mat Pilates is another way to increase core strength, by focusing on deep stabilizing musculature, as well as improve flexibility, posture, and body awareness. These classes can be tailored to accommodate a variety of fitness levels.

Experiencing urinary retention or post-void dribbling? These five strategies may help improve bladder emptying:

1. Double voiding – After urinating, stand up and sit back down to see if additional urine is released. Avoid straining.
2. Positional changes – Try leaning forward, backward, or side-to-side. Subtle shifts may aid complete voiding.
3. Sacral stimulation – Lightly scratch or tap over the sacrum (just below the low back) to stimulate the sacral nerves involved in bladder control.
4. Pelvic floor relaxation – Take a deep breath and focus on letting the pelvic floor muscles fully relax. Avoid pushing or bearing down.
5. Use a footstool or squatty potty – Elevating the feet while sitting can assist in optimizing bladder position and improving flow.

These simple adjustments may support more complete voiding and reduce residual urine!
