Hurtful self-talk is everywhere. Think about that voice, think about the things it says to you - especially the criticism you’ve heard from it 1000 times before. You’re ugly, you’re fat, you’re dumb, you’ll never make it… You know the one. That voice.

Is it the voice of a man or a woman? Is it young or old? If you had to give that voice a name and a hairstyle and a favorite outfit, what would it be? What would that voice look like if they were a real person?

Here’s what never ceases to amaze me: in all the years, I’ve given people that prompt, I’ve never - not even one time - had somebody described themselves.

It’s never their voice saying, hateful things. It’s some creation of their imagination that, at least in my case, bears a shocking resemblance to the authority figure. I was most afraid of as a child. My personal own psychology, notwithstanding, let’s circle back around to you and all the beliefs you have. The voice of judgement that tried to rule your mind? It’s not yours.

If it’s not your voice, why do you allow it to keep talking?

Are you familiar with bonsai trees?

Bonsai trees, if left to its own devices, would grow to be big and bold just like any other tree in nature. So why don’t you know that? Because at some point in history, an arborist discovered that if you kept the bonsai in a tiny container, it wouldn’t realize it was meant to be big - it would grow only to the edge of its pot. It would only grow as big as the box someone else put it in.

The little thing that’s actually big? It’s you.

You are a bonsai tree. You only need to step outside of the box they put you in, and your branches will naturally begin to stretch upward to the sun.

We’re often told to dim ourself, our light, to remain small in order to appease the confront zone of other people. A lot of times, this isn’t spoken but it is something we pick up on energetically.

‘The Body Keeps the Score’ - when things are stuck and stagnant, the body reacts and, at times, brings sickness, disease, depression. In order to be in a state of health, we need to work on reclaiming the fluidity - the connection with our soul.

Stop. Quiet the mind. Be mindful. Breathe.
Get quiet. That’s where the answers are.
When we learn to silence the mind, we are living at the highest potential we have of ‘being’ (not doing). When the body goes into silence and mindfulness, we heal - physically, mentally, and emotionally. Slow your brainwaves down to Beta (relaxation).

What you put out with an open heart is what you bring back into your life.

Change is not easy. It’s time consuming.
It’s sitting in the discomfort and recognizing that…”No one is coming” - it’s up to you!

As a Therapist, I see the good in people, I see their capabilities, even when they don’t see it in themselves. No matter how badly we ‘want it’ for someone, if they don’t identify the need to change and actually put in the work, that change will never happen.

Whether or not someone believes change is needed, having difficult conversations and setting boundaries are imperative to maintain healthy relationships.

Thoughts are automatic - sometimes positive and sometimes negative. It’s up to us if we believe those thoughts or act on them.

As a negative thought creeps in, try challenging it and reframing it to something more realistic/positive (CBT).

As we challenge/reframe our thoughts, we create new neuro-networks that fire positive synapses. Over time, these positive thoughts (cognitions) will help elicit behavior change. E.g., Increased mood/decreased anxiety.

Remember, practice makes permanent NOT perfect!
