Statement from Washington Regional Medical Center-Medical Records
Washington Regional Medical Center is in the process of demolishing several outdated and unsafe buildings on our campus. During this process, we discovered a small number of old medical records from independent physician practices that operated in those facilities more than 30 years ago. These practices were not affiliated with Washington Regional Medical Center, and none of the records appear to belong to our current patients or staff.
Before demolition began, our team entered the buildings and removed all records we could locate. However, due to the lack of electricity and the presence of hazardous conditions—including extensive mold and animal waste—some areas were difficult to access. It now appears that one corner of a building contained additional records that were missed. When those materials were uncovered during demolition, work was immediately halted and efforts began to safely recover and secure them. We take the protection of personal health information very seriously and are working diligently to ensure all records are properly handled in accordance with state and federal regulations. We appreciate the community’s understanding, and we ask that if anyone encounters materials that appear to be medical records, they contact us immediately so that we can collect them safely.
