Answering the Call with Compassion: Lyndsey Johnson

At St. Bernards Five Rivers, compassion isn’t just something we talk about—it’s something we live every day. For Lyndsey Johnson, Emergency Department RN, compassion shows up in the quiet, steady moments where skill, presence, and heart come together.

Lyndsey always felt called to healthcare, but it wasn’t until she shadowed a local APRN that everything clicked. “After that day, I knew that I wanted to go into nursing,” she shared. That moment set her on a path that continues to impact patients and families in meaningful ways.

When asked if there was a single moment that defined her purpose, Lyndsey’s answer speaks volumes: “It’s not just one moment. It’s knowing you showed up, did your job well, and it mattered.” In the fast-paced environment of the Emergency Department, those moments happen every shift—often without recognition, but never without impact.

To Lyndsey, Compassion in Action is simple but powerful: “Doing your job and treating people like they matter. How you treat patients and families will be remembered regardless of the outcome.” It’s a reminder that even in the most critical situations, kindness and respect leave a lasting impression.

Her goal for every patient interaction is clear. “No matter what was happening in the emergency department, that patient had my full attention. I do my best to make sure patients feel like they were heard and had someone advocating for them.” That sense of advocacy is what transforms care into connection.

Many may not realize the level of complexity behind the scenes. “There is constant critical thinking and prioritization,” Lyndsey explains. “Every decision you make matters, and you're balancing urgency, safety, and compassion all at once.” It’s a role that demands both clinical expertise and emotional intelligence every single day.

Working in a rural facility like Five Rivers brings its own unique strengths. “We’re a small facility, but we’re capable of a lot,” she says. “I never realized how versatile staff in small facilities have to be until I started working here.” Without the specialized teams found in larger hospitals, the staff at Five Rivers rely on each other, stepping up in every situation with skill and teamwork.

For those just beginning their journey in healthcare, Lyndsey offers simple but important advice: “It’s okay to not know everything. I’ve been a nurse for six years and I still learn things every day. Ask questions!!”

What keeps her coming back each day? The people. “The staff,” she says. “I thoroughly enjoy coming to work every day and working alongside some of my favorite physicians and nurses. We are all a team, and I am thankful for everything that my team has taught me in my nursing career.”

Lyndsey Johnson exemplifies what it means to put compassion into action—showing up, giving her best, and making sure every patient feels seen, heard, and cared for.
