Breathing Life into Compassion: Daniel Hurst's Story

For Daniel Hurst, compassion isn’t just part of his job — it’s the reason he chose to work in healthcare. His path to becoming a respiratory therapist began in an unexpected place: a factory floor.
“I was working in a factory and getting laid off every other month,” Daniel recalled. “I decided to go back to college, and I knew that I wanted to help people — so I chose to be a respiratory therapist.”
That decision not only changed Daniel’s career but also gave him a new sense of purpose. Each day, he has the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of his patients and their families.
When asked what “Compassion in Action” means to him, Daniel’s response speaks to the heart of patient care. “Every patient is someone’s dad, mom, sister, brother, or grandma,” he said. “I believe and strive to treat each patient as I would want my family treated.”
That belief shapes every interaction Daniel has with those under his care. “I hope that I can make a positive impact during a difficult time and make their stay a bit easier and less stressful,” he shared. “I hope they see that I am here because I care — it’s not just a job.”
For Daniel, the most rewarding part of his work is helping people heal. “Helping people feel better and get back to their lives and family — and hopefully achieving a better quality of life — that’s what keeps me going.”
Daniel is also quick to highlight the people around him. “We have a very knowledgeable and skilled team that cares for the community we serve and strives to give the best care possible,” he said.
When offering advice to those just starting out in healthcare, Daniel’s words reflect the same compassion that guides his work. “Be kind, treat patients like family, and when you have hard days, just trust that the rewards outweigh the bad.”
Daniel Hurst exemplifies what Compassion in Action truly means — caring for others with empathy, respect, and heart. His dedication not only uplifts his patients but also inspires his peers and strengthens the compassionate culture that defines St. Bernards Five Rivers Medical Center.

Serving with Heart Behind the Scenes: Cindy Bagwell’s Story

We’re proud to recognize Cindy Bagwell from Materials Management as our newest recipient of Compassion in Action!

For 27 years, Cindy has been a vital part of the St. Bernards Five Rivers family, quietly ensuring every department has what it needs to care for patients. Though her role is behind the scenes, her impact is felt hospital-wide.

“I always wanted to help others and make a difference in people’s lives,” Cindy shared, explaining what inspired her to work in healthcare.

To Cindy, Compassion in Action means lending a helping hand without being asked. “Helping someone without being asked to — that’s what compassion looks like to me,” she said. She hopes patients and families feel she was friendly and helpful, even through small gestures like offering directions or a smile.

Many don’t realize the critical role she plays. “I stock all the departments with supplies and handle all hospital supply ordering,” Cindy explained. Her dedication ensures clinicians have the tools they need to provide excellent patient care.

The most rewarding part of her job? “Being part of the St. Bernards Five Rivers family — knowing if I need help, they are always there.” She says working here has made her a better person, even in small ways like helping someone navigate the facility.

When asked about her legacy, Cindy said, “I hope the next Materials Management Manager is organized and knows their role — it helps the hospital run smoothly.”

And after nearly three decades, her favorite thing remains the same: her co-workers. “They aren’t just co-workers — they’re family.”

Cindy Bagwell embodies Compassion in Action, serving others with kindness and dedication behind the scenes.
