I often get the question, “how do I love my body if I don’t like the way it looks?”

I’d say this struggle is the biggest hold back with sustainable weight loss or body recomposition.

Let’s look at it this way, when you love someone you choose actions that show love even when you don’t feel it, right? It’s the same with our bodies. Love and connection is built through actions. Challenge your body. Feed your body. Give your body rest. Talk nice to your body, even when you don’t feel like it.

Having the approach of “I’ll love you if and when you do what I want”, is punishment, not love. ❤️❤️

There is this fight between toxic diet culture and body positivity. We as women try to jump on one train or the other as an attempt to reconcile this battle in our head.

You can still want to lose weight AND still love your body.

It doesn’t have to be one or the other. The toxicity comes when you are rigid in your thoughts and behaviors. It looks like this ⬇️

🎤”I can’t eat that or I will become or stay fat.”

🎤 “I have to workout today or I won’t feel good about myself.”

🎤”If I want to change my body, it means I don’t love my body.”

🎤 “I can’t love myself until I lose the weight.”

Try this instead: “I love myself enough to hold myself accountable.”

I always focused on fixing every imperfection. It consumed my thoughts and guided every action including what I would eat, wear and how much I exercised.

It was exhausting but I thought it was what I was suppose to do as a woman trying to…prove her worth?!?

I knew after competing for years, constantly asking myself how I could fix or change myself and watching other women think and do the same thing that something had to change. They were all as exhausted as I was. It was like there was a bucket and it just had holes.

I decided that instead of choosing to try to fix my body, I would build the parts of me I had ignored for years.

I started playing piano again.

I focused on reading books I had pushed off for years.

I got curious about my spirituality.

I listed places I wanted to travel and started to roll.

I got to know my kids in ways I didn’t know them before.

Our minds are powerful. Our focus is always on the mental network we are in. So if you focus on the lack, you will sure as hell identify lack. If you focus on abundance and curiosity, your mind will display desire and capability.

For 18 years I was in the fitness industry. I loved helping women be more active, become more fit and a better version of themselves. At least that’s what I thought I was doing.

I worked with thousands of women over my 18 years. It was fulfilling. Until…I realized that no matter how much someone’s body changed, it was only a temporary fix to a much deeper problem.

Once I realized what it was, I immediately went back to school to become a Psychotherapist and quit my career in fitness. I still love being active and taking care of my body, but not at the expense of my mental and emotional health and more importantly, my body and self image.

With every figure competition I competed in, every “I’ll start my diet on Monday”, and every percentage my body fat would drop, I became more rigid and obsessed with things that didn’t matter. I placed all my focus on the way my body looked rather than developing my mental and emotional health and deeper than that my identity.

Exercise is great. Until you feel guilty when you take a day off.

Eating healthy is great. Until you feel shame from eating “bad food”.

Wanting to challenge your body is great. Until nothing is ever enough.

Thoughts?

I always focused on fixing any imperfections rather than building my heart and soul. It held me back until I remembered I had other parts of myself that I was yearning to connect with and develop.
