Aromatherapy as a Complement to Yoga Therapy:
Bridging the Senses and the Subtle Body

Sherry Burton Steine, MA, E-RYT 500, Certified Level 1 NAHA Aromatherapist,
Certified Trauma-Informed Aromatherapist

"Aromatherapy and Yoga Therapy share a common language—the language of the subtle body. Both seek to restore balance by awakening awareness, harmonizing prana, and supporting the nervous system’s innate ability to regulate and heal. In this sensory-rich and evidence-informed presentation, Sherry Burton Steine explores how essential oils serve as therapeutic allies within the framework of Yoga Therapy.

Drawing from her training as a Certified Aromatherapist and Yoga Therapist-in-Training, Sherry introduces participants to the ways scent can complement therapeutic yoga practices for emotional regulation, trauma recovery, and overall well-being. Through the concept of “aromatic mindfulness,” participants will discover how the olfactory system directly influences the limbic brain—offering profound support for nervous-system regulation, mood stabilization, and presence during asana, pranayama, and meditation.

This interactive session blends science and spirit. Participants will experience guided aromatic breathwork, reflection, and discussion that illustrate how scent enhances therapeutic outcomes, deepens self-awareness, and facilitates somatic release. By integrating the energetic wisdom of Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Yoga Therapy, the presentation demonstrates how aromatherapy amplifies yoga’s holistic aim—to unite body, mind, and soul in harmony.

In 2026, Sherry will begin offering training programs designed to help yoga teachers, yoga therapists, and aromatherapists integrate scent and breath into therapeutic settings. These programs build on the same principles explored in this presentation—blending evidence-based practice with energetic and spiritual wisdom."
