Let's turn to calling for a helicopter when working in a hospital setting. This picture gives multiple examples of why a helicopter may be called to transport a patient. Delays or turn downs for flights are similar to scene flights but can be complicated by multiple factors.Such factors include longer transport times, a large volume of oxygen required by the patient, and large pieces of equipment in addition to patient weight (Impella, ECMO, Balloon pump) may be a factor. Weather at the base, the sending hospital, and the receiving hospital are taken into consideration.
If flight is not an option, MedFlight tries to obtain an appropriate ground asset in a timely manner to ensure the patient can be transported. However, this can cause delays if multiple hospitals or units require ground transports at the same time. Patient triage helps MedFlight to prioritize trips appropriately by acuity/severity.
