Abhyanga | The Wisdom of the Strokes

Abhyanga is not random touch.
Each stroke is intentional, rhythmic, and directional.

Long, steady movements along the limbs follow the pathways of the nāḍīs, supporting the flow of prāṇa throughout the body.
Circular strokes around the joints help release accumulated vāta - the place where dryness, tension, and restlessness often gather.

These patterns are designed to support the natural movement of prāṇa through its five primary directions (pañca vāyus), restoring balance within the subtle body while grounding the physical one.

Through this steady, mindful touch, the doṣas are gently pacified and the dhātus are nourished.
The lymphatic system is encouraged to move, and the nervous system is invited to soften.

What may look simple from the outside is, in practice, deeply listening hands -
responding to the body’s cues, its pace, its needs.

Abhyanga teaches us that healing arises not from force,
but from rhythm, consistency, and presence.

Abhyanga is an act of reverence - a sacred anointing ritual.
A remembering that your body is worthy of care and presence.

Whether offered to yourself at home or received from a loving, attentive practitioner,
abhyanga is a practice of being met.

This treatment nourishes the body on the deepest level
and gently calms the mind and nervous system.

It is love in action -
expressed through conscious touch, warm oil, and unhurried presence.

The Sanskrit word abhyanga comes from abhi (toward, into) and aṅga (limb or body):

a turning toward the body with care.

In the next post, I’ll share more about the deeper layers of this practice.

2026 Āyurvedic Bodywork Trainings
Pomfret, Connecticut

I’m opening my 2026 in-person Āyurvedic bodywork trainings — a small, intentional series of hands-on immersions held in a quiet, supportive setting in Pomfret, CT.

Each training is limited to two students only. This allows for a deeply personal learning experience where each student both gives and receives, and has my full guidance throughout. The small group format creates space not only for learning authentic therapeutic skills, but for a profound inner experience to unfold through touch, presence, and practice.

Karṇa pūraṇa is often described as a treatment for the ears, but its reach goes well beyond hearing alone. When we understand both the Āyurvedic and physiological perspectives, the benefits make a lot of sense.

This practice may be supportive if you experience:
• ringing in the ears or ear sensitivity
• dryness or discomfort in the ears
• jaw, temple, or head tension
• migraines or stress headaches
• neck and shoulder tension
• dizziness or a sense of ungroundedness
• sensory overload or nervous system dysregulation
• difficulty settling, especially before sleep

From an Āyurvedic lens, this is about pacifying vāta - calming excess movement in the head and nervous system.
From a Western lens, warm oil in the ear gently stimulates branches of the vagus, trigeminal, and facial nerves, helping shift the system out of vigilance and into rest.

The warmth, pressure, and temporary quieting of sound can soften jaw tension, support a shift from vigilance into rest-and-digest states, and bring a surprising sense of steadiness and calm.

When to avoid this practice:
• active ear infection
• discharge from the ear
• perforated eardrum
• ear tubes or recent ear surgery
• sharp or unexplained ear pain
• significant, impacted wax

Next post: I’ll share how to practice this safely and simply at home (one of my favorite home practices).

A Season for Repose: Conscious Rest & the Many Faces of Grief -

December often arrives carrying two seemingly opposite energies: outward fullness and inner depletion. Calendars crowd with obligations, gatherings, and expectations, even as the body quietly asks for slowing, warmth, and rest. This tension has been especially present for me this season, and it’s ...
