In January, California became the first state to require folic acid, an essential vitamin that helps prevent serious birth defects in babies, to be added to tortillas and corn masa products sold in the state.

Folic acid has been added to foods like bread and cereal for decades, but corn masa products, an integral part of Latino household diets, were not required to have the vitamin added.

According to the California Department of Public Health, Latinas are less likely to take folic acid before pregnancy compared to other groups, placing their developing fetus at higher risk for birth defects.

“Critical early development has already begun by the time someone finds out they’re pregnant– especially in an unplanned pregnancy,” said Libia Wolhert, MD, family medicine and maternity care physician. “Adding folic acid to foods that families already eat every day is a powerful way to support healthy pregnancies and healthier babies.”

Our cherished Mount Baldy area has become one of the most popular recreation sites in the Angeles National Forest, according to the US Forest Service 🌲

Although the Mount Baldy summit trails are considered moderately challenging hikes, winter storms transform them into icy, treacherous terrain for the unprepared. In the last 10 years, the mountain has claimed more than 20 lives, with hundreds more injured.

Eric Sechrist, DO, emergency medicine physician, spoke with Michael Monks of KFI AM 640 about some of the injuries we see in our Emergency Department and Trauma Center, and how the community can be more prepared when thinking about hiking in the mountains.

⚠️ To protect public safety, the US Forest Service issued a closure of Mount Baldy and its surrounding trails in the San Antonio Canyon due to expected inclement weather, effective February 10 – 23, 2026.

Quarterbacks don’t walk onto the biggest stage without preparation.
They train, watch for signals, and rely on experienced coaches to guide the game.
Your heart needs the same approach.

According to the American Heart Association, heart health is built on Life’s Essential 8, habits and health measures that support long-term heart function and help prevent heart disease.

🏈 Train your heart
Just like athletes condition year-round, regular movement, heart-healthy eating, quality sleep, weight management and avoiding to***co help strengthen your heart and improve endurance.

🏈 Watch the signals
In football, players read the field and adjust. Your body sends signals, too. Changes like shortness of breath, fatigue, chest discomfort, or shifts in blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar are signs to pay attention to.

🏈 Bring in the experts
When a game changes, teams turn to their coaches. When something doesn’t feel right, cardiology experts can help evaluate symptoms, diagnose heart conditions and guide the right treatment plan.

This Heart Month, prepare your heart for the most important game of all: the game of life.

At just 37 years old, Upland resident Joy Kimeu’s life changed in an instant when she suffered a massive stroke while preparing for nursing school exams.

Her mother quickly called 911 and after being taken to a local hospital, she was transferred to our Comprehensive Stroke Center for advanced care. Our stroke team raced against time, unsure if she would survive.

Vladimir Cortez, DO, neurosurgeon, performed a lifesaving thrombectomy, a procedure for stroke that removes a blood clot from a blocked vessel in the brain by using a special thin wire that is inserted in the groin and moves up to the brain to remove the clot.

Joy’s recovery was long and uncertain. She spent weeks critically ill on life support, surrounded by a care team and a mother who never stopped believing. Slowly, Joy began to show signs of healing and was discharged after seven weeks of intensive care.

Months after discharge, one of her close care team members, Katey Vuong, RN, BSN, palliative care nurse (pictured left), received a special video from Joy’s mom - she was home, smiling, walking and singing.

“I’m so happy to be alive and given a second chance,” says Joy. “If it wasn’t for the great team at the hospital, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Today, Joy is thriving, continuing rehab, and grateful for her second chance in life. Her story is a powerful reminder that recognizing stroke signs and acting fast saves lives.

Remember BE FAST: Balance issues, Eyesight changes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty and Time to call 911.

Maternal Health Awareness Day reminds us that caring for mothers is a community responsibility. “Holding Ground on Maternal Health,” the theme for this year, means making sure every mother in our community feels safe, supported and respected when seeking care.

We've been seeing an alarming trend in our area - women delaying prenatal care, especially in the first trimester. Though it can be due to challenges with transportation, time off work or immigration fears, some women are also choosing to wait until later in their pregnancies to seek care.

"Early and regular prenatal care saves lives, and we must continue working together to remove barriers and protect the health of mothers and babies," says M. Hellen Rodriguez, MD, OB/GYN, perinatologist, and our medical director of maternal-fetal medicine.

Read about the importance of early prenatal care and why women may be delaying their appointments in this Q&A with Dr. Rodriguez - https://tr.ee/0yfZ6i

On December 28, 2007, Mattias Carney was born at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

Though 2007 wasn’t the official “Baby Boom” of the post WWII era, it was known as the “boomlet,” with a record 4.3 million births in the U.S., the highest in the country’s history. Mattias made a record as well. He was our 8,000th baby born in 2007 🎉

His mother recently reached out to share that Mattias had just reached his 18th birthday this past December. She also sent us this copy of his birth announcement – a newspaper article in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin from December 30th, 2007 – “Baby’s birth sets record” 📰

So, what is Mattias up to now?

Mattias is active in both academics and athletics. He is currently a senior at School of Extended Educational Options Charter School in the Pomona Unified School District, where he serves as his class president. He coaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and continues to train and compete in the sport. He also stays involved in fitness and leadership opportunities whenever possible, including being an EM Sports Academy student athlete.

Mattias is in the process of applying to the United States Air Force Academy, with the goal of becoming a pilot and serving his country. He is passionate about leadership, discipline and giving back to others.

Most important, his parents are extremely proud of the young man he has become. And so are all of us here at PVHMC – congratulations, Mattias ❤

Fun fact: Mattias’ dad worked here at PVHMC as an EMT from 1999-2006 before he became a firefighter-paramedic.
