EYE EXAM FOR YOUR KIDS (Recommended by Medical Eye Services- MES)

Why Should You Get Your Child's Eyes Examined?

Good vision is vital for physical and educational development in children. An eye exam is one of the best ways to protect your child's vision because it can detect eye problems at their earliest stage - when they're most treatable. The most common children's eye conditions include Strabismus and Amblyopia for which early detection is critical. Regular eye exams give your child's eye doctor a chance to help your child correct or adapt to vision changes.

Here are some guidelines to follow for your child's eye health:
Children 5 Years and Younger

Screening for eye disease should be conducted at:

Newborn to 3 months
6 months to 1 year
3 years
5 years

Please read !!! Especially if you wear contact lens or know anyone who does. I personally saw a case like this during my residency training. So, believe me it does happen to more than 1 person. Also pay attention to what your optometrists are telling you at your annual CL check up. "DO NOT SLEEP IN YOUR CL, DO NOT SWIM OR SHOWER WITH CL AND NEVER USE WATER TO RINSE CL"
And please do not say that "I was never told..."

SUNLIGHT AND YOUR EYES
Eye protection is essential: Long-range ultraviolet (UVA) and short-range ultraviolet (UVB) rays are the most dangerous forms of light produced by the sun. Over time, exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays without proper protection can contribute to long term problems such as skin cancer, cataracts, pterygium, macular degeneration, photokeratitis or snow blindness.

You should: Protect your eyes using HIGH QUALITY sunglasses and wide-brim hat when spending time outdoor

Your eyes are tiny spheres of wonder. A doctor can find warning signs of high blood pressure, diabetes, and a whole range of other systemic health issues, just by examining your eyes. Ophthalmologist Neal Adams explains why the eye's tissues and blood vessels make such a good barometer for wellness.

Great story...BUT...don't wait for your facebook friends to tell you that there is something "different" about your children's eyes. Take your kids to the eye doctor and asked for a dilated eye exam at least once before they start formal schooling.

When Tara Taylor put a photo on Facebook, she thought she was just showing off her daughter's hair. But thanks to friends' observations, that post ended up saving her 3-year-old's vision instead. According to Memphis' News 3, the Tennessee mom upl...

It is also quite sad to know that patients who suffered from Usher Syndrome also have significant progressive loss of vision. The word syndrome means that multiple symptoms occur together, in this case, deafness and blindness. This particular type of visual impairment is known as retinitis pigmentosa. These patients will experience gradual loss of vision starting from the periphery, restricting their visual field causing "tunnel vision"....and eventually complete blindness. Classic presentation of retinitis pigmentosa can be observed during a dilated fundus exam. So, don't forget to ask your optometrist at your next dilated exam to see what he/she observed in your eyes.
