This is what the early weeks of pregnancy look like. After fertilization, the egg moves down your fallopian tube and divides into more and more cells. When this ball of cells attaches to the lining of your uterus, we have a pregnancy.

Maternal Health Awareness Day reminds us that caring for mothers is a community responsibility. “Holding Ground on Maternal Health,” the theme for this year, means making sure every mother in our community feels safe, supported and respected when seeking care.

We've been seeing an alarming trend in our area - women delaying prenatal care, especially in the first trimester. Though it can be due to challenges with transportation, time off work or immigration fears, some women are also choosing to wait until later in their pregnancies to seek care.

"Early and regular prenatal care saves lives, and we must continue working together to remove barriers and protect the health of mothers and babies," says M. Hellen Rodriguez, MD, OB/GYN, perinatologist, and our medical director of maternal-fetal medicine.

Read about the importance of early prenatal care and why women may be delaying their appointments in this Q&A with Dr. Rodriguez - https://tr.ee/0yfZ6i

ICYMI: Hospital maternity units are shutting down all over California and the process has accelerated in recent years. PBS So Cal reporter David Nazar visited PVHMC last year to learn about this crisis and how it's impacting women and their families all over California.

David spoke with our high-risk maternal-fetal experts, Medical Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine M. Hellen Rodriguez, MD, and Richard Burwick, MD, maternal-fetal medicine physician and medical director of our OB/GYN Fellowship Program, about falling birth rates, Medicaid reimbursement and other factors that are contributing to this troubling trend.

We are proud to be a leader in maternity care in the state, with an exceptional high-risk maternity program, as well as a maternal-fetal transport program that provides care to patients from all over Southern California due to labor and delivery units shutting down in our surrounding communities. Thanks to this incredible transport team, pregnant mothers and newborns as far as Mammoth Lakes can get the vital care they need.
