zayin adar. A day most people barely notice on the calendar. but for the quiet heroes of our people, it’s a deeply sacred day...

Today we pause to honor the men and women of the Chevra Kadisha (burial society), who lovingly volunteer their time to complete another fellow Jew’s final journey on this earth.

At Neshama Jewish Funeral Services, we get to see what most people don’t... the quiet, holy work happening behind the scenes, literally day and night. Whether it is doing a taharah, shmira, or simply just being there for every family and every niftar (deceased) with so much care and respect.

We appreciate all you do!

Did You Know?

The word ‘Yahrzeit’ is yiddish and is translated to mean “time of year.” In Judaism, there is a focus on carrying on the memory of those before us from generation to generation. Based on Jewish law, the day of a Yahrzeit is one year following the death of a loved one as calculated in accordance with the Hebrew calendar. This remembrance is performed annually by reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish and burning a Yahrzeit candle for 24 hours. Traditionally, the observance begins on the anniversary of the Hebrew date of death and the candle is lit at sunset. When a death occurs after sunset, the following day is used to observe the Yahrzeit.

(As these customs vary widely, it would be best to consult with your local rabbi.)

Last night/today (new years), we got the call….

A family needed to have their loved one brought to Israel for burial. the “Jewish”funeral home they had a pre-arrangement with simply didn’t have the resources to make it happen on a legal holiday. Instead of pretending they could handle it, they picked up the phone and called us.

When it comes to complex, time‑sensitive Jewish burials and transport to Israel, this is what we do. all day, every day. We worked together, and thank g-d, we got it done.

At Neshama, we focus on one thing: authentic Jewish burial, carried out with kavod and professionalism.

Good job, team.

DID YOU KNOW…?

One of the traditional Jewish practices following the loss of a family member is "Kriah””, a term which means "tearing" in Hebrew. Kriah involves tearing one's garment, usually in the area of the heart, as a symbol of grief and mourning. This act is performed at the funeral before the burial by immediate relatives.

The practice of Kriah has several meanings and purposes rooted in Jewish tradition. Firstly, it serves as a visual symbol of the mourner's deep sadness and heartbreak over the loss of a loved one. By tearing the garment, the mourner physically demonstrates the emotional pain they are experiencing. Additionally, the act of tearing the garment is seen as a reminder of the fragility of human life and the impermanence of all things. It is a humbling reminder of the finite nature of our existence and the inevitability of death.

Kriah also has historical and biblical significance. In the Book of Bereshis (Genesis), Jacob tears his garment in mourning when he learns of his son Joseph's supposed death. This act set a precedent for the practice of Kriah as a traditional way of expressing grief amongst Jews.

NESHAMA AIR...

Imagine a Jewish funeral home with its own private plane.

In today’s world, storms, holidays, and fully booked flights can delay kevurah (burial) for days. That’s simply not an option when Jewish tradition demands speed and dignity.

We don’t own a plane (yet), but we do have strong relationships with private aircraft services, and our team moves expeditiously to get the meis (deceased) to their final destination as fast as physically possible, with full kavod (respect) and care for the family.

We can assist any Jewish family, flying anywhere in the world, to or from our funeral home in Florida coordinating every detail from pickup to burial.

Did You Know?

When visiting a cemetery, Jewish tradition teaches something deeply meaningful… that is, one should refrain from stepping on or over a grave.

Why? Because every gravesite holds the remains of someone who once carried a Neshama (soul). Stepping over that sacred space is seen as disrespectful not just to the body, but to the soul that once gave it life. Instead , we walk around graves, taking care to avoid crossing over them.

This simple act reflects one of the most beautiful values in Judaism… the profound reverence for life, even after it has ended.

Every Neshama (soul) matters. Forever.

“Jews with tattoos can’t be buried in a Jewish cemetery.”

Youve probably heard that one before… but it’s simply not true!.

Jewish law does discourage getting tattoos, but it does not bar anyone from a Jewish burial. Every Jew, regardless of personal choices, is entitled to a dignified burial according to Jewish tradition.

🕯️ Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Remembrance Day 🕯️

Today, on Yom HaShoah, we pause to honor the memory of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, and to pay tribute to the survivors whose resilience and strength continue to inspire us.

At Neshama Jewish Funeral Services, we believe it is our sacred duty to remember, to educate, and to ensure that the stories of those who lived through the Shoah are never forgotten.

We invite you to watch a powerful video we’ve shared today—featuring the firsthand testimony of Holocaust survivor 'Chef Meir Rapaport'. His story is a testament to the endurance of the human spirit and the importance of bearing witness.
