🚨 New research on raw vs kibble just landed – and it has big implications for how we feed our dogs. 🚨

A controlled DogRisk trial from the University of Helsinki followed 46 Staffordshire Bull Terriers on either a high‑carb kibble or a high‑fat, low‑carb raw meat‑based diet for about 4.5 months, measuring detailed blood markers before and after the diet period.

💡 What this means for kibble‑fed dogs
On the high‑carb kibble diet, dogs showed:

• Higher long‑term blood sugar (HbA1c), meaning their bodies were exposed to more sugar over time and had to work harder to keep it under control.

• Higher blood fats (cholesterol and triglycerides), a pattern generally viewed as less favourable for metabolic health.

• Increased bodyweight, adding to the “more sugar + more fat + more weight” cluster that can raise the background risk of metabolic issues over the long term.

In plain language: a typical high‑carb kibble in this study nudged dogs toward a more strained metabolic state – not something you see in a day, but a pattern that matters over years.

💡 What this means for raw‑fed dogs
On the well‑formulated, high‑fat, low‑carb raw diet, dogs showed:

• Lower blood sugar, suggesting their bodies managed energy with less insulin “stress.”

• Lower blood fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) than both their own baselines and the kibble group at the end.

• A lower TyG index, a marker used in human medicine where lower usually means better insulin sensitivity.

• Higher ketones, indicating they were comfortably using fat as a primary fuel source in a mild, non‑pathological ketosis.

Translated: balanced raw in this trial pushed dogs toward a more relaxed, fat‑adapted metabolic profile that is generally considered more favourable.

⚠️ Important caveats
• One breed, one time frame (~4.5 months): this shows metabolic patterns, not lifetime disease outcomes. More research is needed.

• It does not mean every kibble is harmful or every raw is safe. Nutrient balance, ingredient quality and hygiene still matter enormously.

• Any switch, kibble or raw, should be done with a vet or nutrition professional who understands both options.
