🔊 What Is a Decibel (dB)?
A decibel is the unit used to measure how loud a sound is — but what makes it interesting is that the decibel scale isn’t linear… it’s logarithmic.
That means each increase of 10 dB represents 10 times more sound energy, not just “a little louder.”
Here are a few common sound levels to help visualize it:
• 🗣️ Normal conversation: around 60 dB
• 🚗 Busy traffic: around 85 dB
• 🎵 Concerts & power tools: 100–120 dB
• 🚨 Sirens & jet engines: 120 dB+
Why it matters:
Repeated or long-term exposure to loud sounds can lead to permanent, noise-induced hearing loss — and it often happens gradually, making it hard to notice at first.

Decibels are used to measure sound levels. They are also used to show the extent of hearing loss on audiograms.
