Tanglefoot Trail

Tanglefoot Trail Welcome to the Tanglefoot Trail! W.C. Faulkner in 1871. We look forward to seeing you on the trail!

The Tanglefoot Trail located in the Mississippi Hills National Heritage area preserves the abandoned railroad corridor assembled for the Ripley Railroad by Col. With its storied past, the 44.5 mile asphalt trail offers multi-use recreational opportunities as it winds through six communities, forests, fields, pastures, and wetlands in Union, Pontotoc and Chickasaw counties in northeast Mississippi.

Bikers, walkers, joggers, runners and nature enthusiasts enjoy the beauty of the trees, the meadows, the creeks, the flora and the fauna with an occasional stop to learn a bit of history.

ATTENTION: TANGLEFOOT TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS IN PROCESS
The GM&O District was awarded grant funds from FHWA/MDOT Transportation Alternatives Program and Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund to upgrade the Trail and bridges in a Phase 1 (Trail) and Phase 2 (Bridges). These improvements are vital for the Trail. To date, the contractor has been able to perform the work without closing the Trail to users. PLEASE BE MINDFUL AND COURTEOUS TO THE WORKERS WHO ARE WORKING ON THIS IMPORTANT PROJECT. As the project moves further along there will be periods the Trail will be closed. We will provide notice of the closures on Facebook. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to maintain and upgrade the Tanglefoot Trail so we can all continue to enjoy it.

Trees and large debris have been moved off the trail from Houston going north to the Union County line; however, smaller debris remains and will be cleared as quickly as possible. Sections of the trail in UNION COUNTY are still IMPASSABLE and require heavy equipment to clear. Falling trees and limbs continue to be a possibility and hazard. We are keeping all those impacted by this storm in our thoughts. Be safe and thank you for your patience.
