As family physicians, we promote healthy lifestyles and preventive care, as well as take care of our pediatric patients when are ill. As experts in the prevention and treatment of childhood illnesses as well as experts in the care of our patients, we, along with our Pediatrician colleagues, are the best source of individualized medical advice. I support the current AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) and AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) guidelines for childhood vaccines. I, along with my fellow physicans at Poolesville Family Practice, will always place the health and care of our pediatric patients and their families as our guiding principle. Please get your kids vaccinated for the Flu

According to a new report from the CDC, outpatient visits for “flu-like” illness are at their highest in nearly 30 years, and nine children have died of flu this season. In addition, a recently reported pediatric death from last year brings the 2024-’25 season total to 289, which is higher than any season since the CDC started tracking in 2004.

The surge in flu-like illness comes just as the CDC announced an overhaul to the childhood vaccine schedule that includes removing universal recommendations for numerous vaccines including flu. Despite changes to federal recommendations, the AAP will continue to recommend the flu vaccine for all children starting at six months of age.

Our physicians agree that the incredibly safe and effective Hepatiits B vaccine should continue to be given at birth to protect children from liver failure. We are glad to hear the Maryland Department of Health confirms to support vaccination at birth.

Our physicians are in support of AAFP's position based on decades of research that vaccines are NOT linked to Autism. Unfortunately, the recent change on the CDC website was not based on new scientific evidence but on outdated myths.
This position on the that over 40 research studies in the past 25 years have shown no link is supported by multiple medical organizations (such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) as well as Autism support organizations (such as the Autism Speaks, Autism Science Foundation, and the Autism Society of America).

This type of misinformation not only prevents children from getting life saving vaccines but also does a disservice to persons with Autism and other neurodivergent disorders and their families.

The science has not changed—and neither has the position. Vaccines do not cause autism. Patients, health care clinicians and the American people should be able to trust their government for credible, science- and evidence-based health information. https://bit.ly/48AlBZE

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently added misleading claims to its autism webpage. We want to be clear: decades of high-quality, large-scale studies show that vaccines do not cause autism. "Parents deserve peace of mind. Decades of rigorous research have shown vaccines do not cause autism," said Dr. Susan Kressly, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. "Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to protect children’s health and help them thrive."

The American Academy of Pediatrics stands with members of the autism community who have asked for support in stopping this rumor from spreading any further. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4rbx4FX
