WH Therapy is now offering Pediatric Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation!

As many as 1 in 7 school aged children will struggle with pelvic floor dysfunction presenting as incontinence. Many of these children will go on to suffer with bladder and bowel management into adulthood if it isn’t properly treated. The cause of pediatric incontinence is often times related to lack of strength or coordination of the muscles that make up the pelvic floor. Pelvic floor dysfunction can also present as leaking urine or f***s, constipation, changes in voiding frequency, or a combination of these symptoms.

How can physical therapy help?

Physical therapy can help in providing exercises for the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, improving posture, and providing patient and family education for improved pelvic health.

What are some of the diagnoses that can be treated?

Urinary incontinence
Urinary urgency
Urinary frequency/retention
Bedwetting
Constipation
F***l incontinence
Overactive bladder

What might treatment include?

Patient and family education
Behavior and diet strategies to improve habits
Bladder retraining
Biofeedback
Pelvic floor muscle re-education
Core strengthening
Posture training

Please contact WH Therapy at 573-714-6045 for more information if this may be beneficial for your child.

WH Therapy is now offering dry needling!

What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a technique physical therapists use for the treatment of pain and movement impairments. The technique uses a “dry” needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle.

Other terms commonly used to describe dry needling, include trigger point dry needling, and intramuscular manual therapy.
Dry needling is not acupuncture, a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists. Dry needling is a part of modern Western medicine principles and supported by research.

Why Dry Needling?
Physical therapists use dry needling with the goal of releasing or inactivating trigger points to relieve pain or improve range of motion. Preliminary research supports that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension, and normalizes dysfunctions of the motor end plates, the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles. This can help speed up the patient’s return to active rehabilitation. Dry needling can also be used to increase blood flow which supports healthy tissue and speeds the healing process.

Today’s topic is SI Joint dysfunction/posterior pelvic girdle pain!

Posterior pelvic girdle pain can be common during and after pregnancy. This can be caused by:

• changes to your posture
• increased pressure on your pelvis due to the growth of your baby
• hormonal changes which soften the ligaments that support the pelvis.

These changes can place increased strain on the pelvic joints making the joints inflamed and painful.

What you might feel
• Clicking, locking or grinding in the pelvic joints.
• Pain in the front or the back of the pelvis, buttocks, groin and/or radiating into the thighs.

Activities that may increase your pelvic girdle pain
• Prolonged walking
• Fast walking
• Getting in and out of the car or bed
• Rolling in bed
• Lying flat
• Deep squatting or lunging
• Going up and down stairs
• Standing on one leg (e.g. dressing – putting on pants)
• Moving from sitting to standing
• High impact exercise (e.g. running and jumping activities)

Managing your pelvic girdle pain
To avoid increasing pelvic girdle pain:
• Don’t push through pain.
• Take smaller steps when walking.
• Walk shorter distances.
• Reduce heavy lifting and pushing and pulling activities such as vacuuming.
• Break up large tasks into smaller activities.
• Rest in between activities.
• Keep your knees together when rolling in bed.
• Roll under rather than over when rolling in bed.
• Sleep on your side with a pillow in between your legs.
• Get in and out of bed with your knees together

If your pain persists with these techniques, physical therapy can help you find relief!

Did you know?

Missouri is a direct access state for physical therapy.

Missouri now allows for patients to be seen up to 30 days or 10 visits, whichever comes first, without a doctors referral. After that time, you need a prescription from your physician to continue with further treatment.

What does this mean for me?

You can now reach out directly to a physical therapy provider to schedule evaluation and treatment for your musculoskeletal needs.

This is great news for quick and easy access to physical therapy! Schedule your appointment now!

It’s Women’s Health Wednesday!

Women’s health PT is a specialized area of physical therapy that can encompass A LOT of different diagnoses throughout a woman’s lifespan. A women’s health physical therapist goes through additional training to evaluate and treat conditions specific to women. These may include:

* Issues during pregnancy and post-partum
* Issues during menopause
* Pain during sexual activity
* Pain lifting a child or even a bag of groceries
* Incontinence or “leaking”

Part of the training that some therapists receive is to perform a pelvic exam to assess the muscles of the pelvic floor (more on this in a bit). While an internal exam may be part of your treatment, it does not necessarily need to be. It’s all depending on your needs. Make sure you talk this through with your therapist. This is extremely beneficial in understanding your condition and creating a plan of care specific to you! The goal of women’s health physical therapy is to restore normal function, relieve your pains, restore your confidence, and get you back doing the activities you enjoy.

WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR?
The pelvic floor is a group of striated muscles that attach from your p***c bone to the coccyx (tailbone) and in between your ischial tuberosities (“sit bones”). It makes up the “floor” of your core, so it has an important role in:
* Support of the pelvic organs
* Closure of the urinary and a**l sphincters
* Sexual function
* Posture
These muscles can become dysfunctional (weak, tight, inhibited, etc.) for a variety of reasons. If they do become dysfunctional, it can be the cause of many common diagnoses. These may include:
* Urinary incontinence
* Bowel incontinence
* Pelvic organ prolapse
* Pelvic pain
* Constipation
* Issues during pregnancy and post-partum
* Low back and/or SI joint pain
* And many more diagnoses!
All of these conditions are common, but they are not NORMAL, and they can be treated with physical therapy by a women’s health physical therapist.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction can interfere with your everyday life and limit your ability to be active and participate in activities.The good news? Pelvic Floor Dysfunction is common and treatable. Stop dealing with pain and discomfort. Get relief. By addressing the symptoms and the cause, we can restore strength to your pelvic floor and ultimately free you from the symptoms that keep you from living your best life.

Hi everyone! My name is Lindsy Wilson, and I am the owner of WH Therapy. I have been a physical therapist for nearly 13 years. I have worked in a variety of settings including pediatrics, acute/inpatient rehab, and outpatient. I also have 10 years of experience in women’s health and pelvic floor therapy. A little background on myself, I grew up in Naylor, Missouri and moved to Campbell after graduating physical therapy school and getting married in 2011. We recently moved to Poplar Bluff and are so happy to call it home. I am a wife and a mom to three very busy kids (ages 10, 7, and 2). I look forward to continuing to serve my local community by focusing on the physical therapy needs of women and infants. It’s an exciting time for my family and me. Thank you for joining us on the journey!
