Smartphone Addiction Linked to Chronic Spinal Pain in Young Adults.

Smartphone addiction is a behavioral dependence characterized by excessive, compulsive smartphone use that interferes with daily functioning, relationships, sleep, and mental well-being despite negative consequences. Questionnaires completed by 465 university students revealed that 31% met the criteria for smartphone addiction, which is associated with a two-fold elevated risk of chronic neck, mid-back, or low back pain.

Learning Music Boosts Brain Function in Seniors.

Researchers from University of Sheffield and Western Sydney University report that older adults who learned to play music using either a physical instrument or digital app experienced gains in cognitive and motor function, even if they had no prior musical training. Dark Chocolate Compound Linked to Slower Biological Aging?

Researchers from King’s College London report that higher blood levels of theobromine—a natural compound found in cocoa—were associated with a younger biological age relative to chronological age. These findings suggest that regular consumption of theobromine-rich dark chocolate may be linked to lower oxidative stress and inflammation, improved mitochondrial and vascular function, and other cellular processes that help maintain more accurate cell division as aging progresses.

1 in 8 Teens Show Signs of Hearing Loss.

Examinations of more than 3,300 Dutch teenagers revealed 13% exhibited signs of noise-related hearing damage, with roughly 6% experiencing permanent hearing loss by age 18. The research team attributes these issues to frequent exposure to loud recreational noise—from earbuds, concerts, and fireworks—as a key risk, emphasizing the need for early screening, prevention, and safer listening habits during adolescence.

Just 20 Minutes of Exercise Twice a Week May Prevent Dementia.

Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, researchers found that older adults with mild-cognitive impairment were less likely to progress to dementia over an eight-year time period if they exercised at moderate-intensity—like brisk walking, for example—for at least 20 minutes twice a week. The findings demonstrate the ability of regular physical activity to delay or possibly prevent dementia.

Poor Cardiometabolic Health Influences Dementia Risk.

Using data from the China Kadoorie Biobank study, researchers found that individuals with a history of hypertension or diabetes were 21% and 36% more likely, respectively, to develop dementia over a twelve-year period. These findings suggest that preventive strategies targeting cardiometabolic disorders may also protect brain health.
