John T. Mather Memorial Hospital welcomed its first class of Internal Medicine residents on July 1. The class consists of 19 Internal Medicine residents – 15 three-year residents and 4 one-year residents in a preliminary program who will go on to other specialties.

Mather Hospital on Oct. 10, 2013 broke ground for a new addition that will house a 35-single-bedded patient care unit; offices and teaching facilities for a Graduate Medical Education Program with residencies in Internal Medicine, Family Practice Medicine, Psychiatry and Transitional Year; and a state-of-the-art conference center. The new patient care pavilion marks a major commitment by the Hospital to address the current and future medical needs of the communities it serves.

The Mather Family is deeply saddened by the passing of Helen Rodowicz, president of the Mather Hospital Auxiliary. Helen volunteered at Mather since 1995 and served as Auxiliary President since 2009. She had also been President of Port Jefferson Seniors since 2004. Helen was a talented artist and a kind person.

Viewing is Sunday, Sept. 22, Mangano Funeral Home, Middle Island, 2-4:30 pm, 7-9:30 pm, 8 pm Wake Service. Burial is Monday, 10 am, at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Mammograms make a difference! A recent study done at Massachusetts General Hospital and published in the online journal Cancer found that annual mammograms before age 50 could dramatically cut deaths from breast cancer. Michelle Price, MD, ...from the Fortunato Breast Health Center, has long advocated that women to follow American Cancer Society guidelines and get a mammogram every year after the age of 40 or earlier if advised by physicians.

Actor Ralph Macchio was at the Setauket Yacht Club in Port Jefferson to promote the Village Cup Regatta on Sept. 7. The Regatta raises money for Mather Hospital's Palliative Medicine Program and for The Lustgarten Foundation, which funds research on pancreatic cancer.

Actior Ralph Macchio met the media Friday at the Setauket Yacht Club in Port Jefferson to explain why he agreed to become "ambassador" for the Village Cup Regatta on Sept. 7, which raises money for Mather 's Palliative Medicine Program and for The Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research.
