Can You Still Treat Varicose Veins Before Summer? What to Expect From Modern Treatments
Spring is here, and with it comes the prospect of even warmer days on the horizon. If you have varicose veins, you may be wondering if there is still time to get them treated before summer. If you are more familiar with older methods of varicose vein removal, you may be picturing long recovery times and weeks off your feet.
However, this picture of vein treatments is, thankfully, outdated. At Varicose Vein Center, Dr. Jerry Ninia treats varicose veins with modern methods that are minimally invasive, take less than an hour, are comfortable and do not require downtime. They can also produce results faster and more predictably than older methods. With these options, you can treat your varicose veins and be more comfortable before summer.
Why Spring Is a Good Time to Treat Varicose Veins
Spring is a good vein treatment time, both for practical reasons and for your comfort. The cooler weather of spring makes wearing compression stockings more comfortable in the weeks after treatment. There is also less UV exposure on healing skin, which reduces the chance of post-treatment discoloration.
Treating in April or May gives your body time to heal so you can enjoy all of your favorite summer activities while feeling better. Waiting until fall means spending another summer with symptoms that tend to get even worse in the heat. Swelling, heaviness, itching and aching all intensify when temperatures rise.
Modern Varicose Vein Treatment Options
Sclerotherapy: A solution is injected into smaller varicose veins to irritate them and cause them to collapse and be absorbed by the body.
Laser Ablation: This minimally invasive laser technology treats large and symptomatic varicose veins with thermal ablation.
VenaSeal®: VenaSeal is a nonthermal treatment that uses a medical adhesive to close varicose veins. It does not require compression stockings after treatment.
Varithena®: This prescription foam expands and displaces blood while causing the vein to close. It is great for twisted veins that are harder to reach with a laser.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy: This involves surgical vein removal through a tiny incision. It produces fast results with much less discomfort than traditional vein stripping.
Signs That You Should Not Wait Another Summer
We believe that the sooner you treat your varicose veins, the better. Varicose veins often get worse with time, and you can start to experience complications from the lack of blood flow to your lower legs. These veins are not healthy and are not contributing to proper circulation. Removing them allows blood to circulate through healthy veins instead. You should especially consider treatment if you have:
Legs that ache or feel heavy in the afternoon. This is not normal and is not just tiredness. It is a symptom of venous insufficiency, and it typically worsens over time without treatment.
Visible swelling around the ankles or calves. Swelling that builds through the day and improves overnight points to a circulation problem that should be evaluated by a vein doctor.
Skin changes near the ankle or lower leg. Discoloration, thickening or a brownish tint to the skin near varicose veins can signal that vein disease is progressing toward a more serious stage. This could lead to ulcers if not treated.
Veins that are growing or multiplying. Varicose veins do not resolve on their own. New varicose veins or veins that are getting larger are a sign that underlying venous reflux is actively worsening.
A history of bleeding from a vein. Even minor bleeding from a varicose vein is a medical signal that the vessel wall has become dangerously thin, and you should seek treatment right away.
What a First Appointment at Varicose Vein Center Will Involve
Dr. Ninia conducts every consultation personally and will be involved with your diagnosis and treatment throughout the entire process. He has performed thousands of these procedures and will never push you off onto a less experienced provider.
Your treatment will start with a diagnostic ultrasound to see what is going on under the surface. Sometimes, patients have a condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which can be managed with the right treatments. Dr. Ninia will go over everything you need to know during your consultation and work with you to find the treatment that will be best for you. He is very straightforward and won’t suggest treatments that you don’t need.
How Long Will I Wear Compression Stockings?
Some treatments require them for one to two weeks post-treatment to help with healing and vein closure. Others, like VenaSeal, do not require compression stockings at all. This is something Dr. Ninia factors into the treatment planning process, especially for those who are hoping to be stocking-free as quickly as possible during warm weather.
Why the Provider Matters as Much as the Technology
For years, the standard treatment for varicose veins was surgical vein stripping. It required general anesthesia, an operating room, discomfort for the patient, and a recovery period that could last for weeks. Today, treatments like laser ablation, sclerotherapy, VenaSeal and Varithena are performed in under an hour with no general anesthesia, and patients don’t have to worry about downtime.
Dr. Ninia has been in the field of vascular medicine throughout this entire shift. He has trained other physicians in minimally invasive vein techniques and helped develop board certification standards in the field. He also brings genuine care for his patients to every treatment. Experience and compassion make a difference for both the treatment experience and the results.
