Meet Catherine Borg, 76, who was recently diagnosed with Early Stage Dementia.

One day, Catherine was driving to her girlfriend's house - something she had done for years, but this particular day she got lost and couldn't remember the way. She decided to seek medical attention and was referred to neurologist Dr. Ajay Berdia at the Catholic Health Dementia & Alzheimer's Center at St. Charles.

Catherine has a family history of dementia and Alzheimer's disease and she was acutely aware of how the disease can take over your life. Dr. Berdia explained how there are now two infusions for early stage dementia that are not a cure, but can help slow the progression.

After several infusions, Catherine said her mind has been much clearer, her husband has noticed a difference and she now remembers how to get to her girlfriend's house.

It is with immense pride and gratitude that we celebrate St. Charles' Chief Nursing Officer Nicolette Fiore-Lopez, PhD, RN, CENP, FAONL, FAAN, as a recipient of the DAISY Award for Nursing Leadership.

Throughout her distinguished career, Nikki has embodied the true essence of nursing leadership—leading with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to both patients and the nurses who care for them. Under her guidance, St. Charles Hospital has cultivated a culture where nurses feel supported, valued, and empowered to deliver exceptional care. What started as an 18-month assignment, blossomed into an incredible 22 year journey at St. Charles Hospital.

Her leadership is grounded in open communication, collaboration, and mutual respect—bringing interdisciplinary teams together to ensure the well-being and success of the entire healthcare community.

Nikki’s impact reaches far beyond her role. She is a mentor, advocate, and inspiration to countless nurses, encouraging leadership growth and lifelong learning. Many credit her with shaping their professional journeys and helping them see potential within themselves they didn’t know existed.

As one nomination beautifully shared, “She always made me feel like an equal and took the time to truly listen.” Another noted that her influence extends far beyond policies or titles—her legacy lives on through the many nurses she has inspired.

For her extraordinary leadership, lasting influence, and lifelong dedication to nursing, we thank Nikki with all our heart. She will be terribly missed, but we wish her well in her retirement and this next chapter in her life.

We were especially grateful to be joined by a donor family who shared the story of their son’s tissue donation– a powerful reminder of how one selfless decision can impact and heal so many lives.

Congratulations to St. Charles Foundation Board Member Karen Breen for being recognized at Suffolk County’s Women of Distinction ceremony, nominated by Legislator Stephanie Bontempi.

For more than three decades, Ms. Breen has led the St Charles Hospital Auxiliary Northport chapter supporting pediatric care. She has spent decades as a committed community leader, faith-based volunteer and advocate for veterans, families and local institutions. We are very fortunate to have Ms. Breen on St Charles‘ board — she is truly deserving of this honor!

It is always our greatest pleasure to honor EMS for all that they do for our community members in need of emergent care.

Recently, we were happy to present the “challenge coin” and certificates of appreciation to Middle Island fire department paramedic Jeff Alt and his team. In a critical pre-hospital moment, their skill, teamwork, and quick thinking made all the difference for a patient in need. Their commitment to delivering high-quality emergency care truly reflects the very best of our community.
