Meet Antonio, who was admitted last year on Christmas Eve, due to a stroke.

Having been a construction worker for decades, it was at first hard for Antonio given the limitations he had post stroke.

But Antonio persevered. His goal was to be able to lift his 4 1/2 year old grandson Alexander. When he learned about a new Vivistim neurostimulation implant procedure at St. Charles Hospital, that could improve his arm and hand function, he decided to meet with St. Charles neurosurgeon Dr. Bailey Zampella.

Post surgery and after multiple sessions of rehab at Catholic Health’s Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation in Patchogue, Antonio was able to lift his grandson! And an extra bonus, was his ability to Christmas wrap a large picture frame!

Antonio, Merry Christmas to you and your family, and continued success in your rehab recovery!

For more information about the procedure and to see if you are a candidate, please call 631-751-2700.

Meet four-year-old Romeo, who was diagnosed with Legg Calve Perthes disease, a childhood hip condition where the ball of the thigh bone temporarily loses its blood supply, causing bone death, collapse, inflammation, and often leads to stiffness and reduced motion. Romeo required surgery performed by pediatric orthopedic surgeon Dr. Matthew Wagner. To help Romeo throughout his visit at St. Charles Hospital, the staff gave Romeo our much loved Teddy Bear and Romeo has been sleeping with it ever since!

St. Charles’ annual Christmas Tree Lighting was another memorable event as we honored one of our pediatric rehab patients, Belle. Diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma, Belle had her leg amputated and received her physical therapy at Catholic Health’s Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation in Commack. She wrote a book about her journey called “Belle the Brave,” and we were honored to host a book signing for her! Belle is one special girl whose courage and strength is to be admired!

Meet Elton, a recent patient from St. Charles’
Inpatient Rehabilitation unit. Elton suffered a significant spinal surgery, but with his hard work, determination, along with the help of all of his St Charles therapists and devices such as the Andago, Elton was able to walk out of St Charles and be with his family. The Andago is an overground bodyweight support gait training system.
St. Charles’ rehab has one of only 130 in the nation! Patients like Elton have benefited from this amazing technology. Way to go Elton!
