Have you ever wonder why some folks leave a stone on top of a grave marker? Well it is primarily a Jewish custom that is spreading.I went on line and discovered there are several different explanations, some quite lengthy. I will share just a couple with you. Symbolically it suggest the continuing presence of love and memory, which are as strong as a rock. God is referenced as the Rock of Israel; so leaving a stone is a reminder of the presence of the Rock, and finally leaving a stone on the memorial indicates that someone has visited the grave site. So give it some thought and leave a pebble next time you visit someone special.

Not all headstones and monuments have an epitaph. The epitaph is usually a short message about the person named on the memorial. We've all seen; Beloved husband, Loving father, loyal friend, all are epitaphs. An epitaph may be chosen by an individual during life or by family after passing. They can be quotes from the bible; "In my father's house are many mansions", or a favorite poet; "I took the path less traveled..."; I hope to see my pilot face to face when I have crossed the bar"; or even humorous; "returned to sender".
Epitaphs are for the living, something for us to ponder as we stroll by, something to consider about ourselves, which path to follow.

People wonder when is an appropriate time to consider purchasing a headstone or bronze marker. When you feel comfortable. Gather all the in put from everyone in the family, if the love one is a sibling; if you're choosing for your spouse, take your time and don't allow yourself to be pressured. Consider a budget and stick to it. When both partners can participate, is ideal. Time can be 6 months or less, or many times about year. It's up to you.

Folks have asked me which side is Dad on when considering a memorial. The man is on the left; think about at a wedding, the groom receives his bride on his left. The wedding band is placed on the ring finger of his left hand. Folklore "vena amoris" "vein of love' goes directly from the fourth finger (the ring finger) on the left hand to the heart. Mom standing next to Dad is closet to his heart on Dad's left side.
