In the state of Washington, a planned home birth with a licensed midwife is just as safe as a birth at a licensed birth centre.

*Starting this Friday, October 8th!*

Thriving Together Prenatal and Postnatal Support Group
Meets Fridays from 9:30 - 10:30 at Hearth Natural Medicine in the Community Classroom.

Covid Precautions: Currently, all adult participants must wear a mask to attend our circle. We will also have fresh air circulating into our space and/or air filters operating during our meeting.

Thriving Together is a prenatal and postpartum support group that meets every week to share our experiences of parenthood in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space. We welcome big emotions and the full range of pregnancy and parenting experiences from the most joyous to the most challenging. Our circle strives to help new families build community, normalize prenatal and postpartum experiences, and cultivate the inherent intuition of new parents. We do not subscribe to any particular parenting strategies and maintain the circle as an advice free zone. Instead we listen with an open mind and presence. Most participants find increased ease, resilience and confidence in parenting from the simple act of sharing and witnessing each other's experiences.

Facilitated by Claire Thomas, Meredith Milholland, and Aleah Lawrence-Pine

I am excited to begin offering doula and montrice services for birthing families!

Curious what a montrice does? Montrice care is a special blend of midwifery and doula work. A montrice’s primary role is that of labor support. Just like a doula, a montrice offers hands-on and emotional support during labor. As a montrice, I can also perform limited clinical assessments such as monitoring the baby’s heart rate during labor, vital signs, and assessing cervical dilation. This information can be helpful, especially for deciding when to go to the hospital. Home birth is not the right decision for every family– for a variety of reasons. But hiring a montrice may help bridge the two worlds, so that you can increase your chances of having a low-intervention birth in the hospital.

Good midwifery care can make a world of difference. In fact, even if birth goes nothing as you'd hoped, with fantastic midwifery support your birth can still be a very healing, positive and empowering experience.

I have come to believe that there are 3 essential requirements in order to set yourself up for the birth experience you deserve...
1. good information - understanding birthing physiology and how the system and its power dynamics seek to undermine our innate capacity to safely give birth
2. tuning in, trusting our body wisdom and following our intuition - this often takes practice because we are conditioned to do the exact opposite from a very young age
3. good support - having a midwife (and/or birth support team) who wholeheartedly respects and honours the above two points, and who appreciates the importance of not interfering with a healthy birthing process
*
Many of my pregnant clients - those who had a traumatic first birth and are seeking to have a healing next birth - end up changing their care provider after our session. I talk about what good support looks like and remind them that they are able to switch care providers if they decide their midwife is not the best fit for them. I've never heard someone say they regretted swapping, whereas I have certainly heard people say they regret they didn't 'listen to their gut' and switch.

I love the story of my first ever paying client - she was 34 weeks pregnant when she contacted me. Her first birth was a traumatic forceps delivery with poor support from her midwife. This time she was paying for private obstetric care. After talking at length about her previous birth, different types of maternity care providers, different philosophies of care, and what her hopes and dreams were for this next birth, she ended up firing her OB team, finding a great midwife, and went on to have her dream birth - at home! (she has since gone on to have another home birth).

Holistic Midwifery Care & Home Birth

I started North Sound Midwifery in the beginning of 2019 to help create more options for community midwifery care on the Olympic Peninsula. This practice is based out of Port Townsend, WA, and serves families in Jefferson, Clallam and Kitsap Counties. In addition to having this practice, I also work alongside Morgan Hughes, LM, CPM with Salt and Cedar Midwifery as a midwife and birth assistant. Morgan and I have two separate practices that support each other through collaboration.
