MONDAYS
If you're ever wondering why Mondays are so difficult.... and why your kids may be extra crabby and grumpy, think back to how hard you work after a vacation to re-institute their schedules! While away on vacation, schedules naturally drift away, allowing for the freedom from time constraints. The end result....a need to readjust once home which can take a FULL week!
That said, a weekend is comparable to a mini-vacation where again, a readjustment is required to get back on track! Take heart.....(as I had to do this morning after dealing with my own three sons), Tuesday is right around the corner :))))

Teaching Our Children to Wait, and Why its Beneficial

I remember ordering a Barbie doll as a little girl. It took a while to receive; perhaps three or four weeks, and when it did arrive, it wasn’t the one I was hoping to receive. The thought of exchanging my new Barbie never once occurred to me; instead, I accepted my new doll and grew fond of her. As a parent, I now look back on my experience and consider the wait to receive this item, the fact that I wasn’t given the ability to return/exchange it, and the fact that I grew to enjoy my new Barbie despite its differences.

In our fast paced, frenetic society, with technology and video games serving to further shorten the attention spans of our children, I celebrate the occasional line we are forced to wait on as a way to “unindulge” my kids and bring them closer to the reality they will face in our complicated world. I’d love for them to wait (instead of having items delivered by Amazon in a day) and better appreciate what is purchased for them. I’d also like for them to learn to adapt when an item isn’t just the way they envisioned it.

How blessed we are to have so many choices and material goods at our fingertips. Is it a blessing?

The desire of my kids to avoid waiting has also taught me to be conspicuously gracious when driving in an effort to demonstrate that anyone on the road that needs to speed ahead can gladly do so. I will stay safe, let them pass …. and wait.

Perhaps if all parents modeled what was the norm of thirty and forty years ago…. we would have a calmer, more mindful and thoughtful society. It starts with us; let’s slow things down.

As a mother of boys, I often ponder what I would have done differently had I been a bit more forward thinking. It's never too early to teach respect, and it's best to begin before your boys even realize what they're learning. If I knew then what I know now, martial arts would have been a priority on the list of my boys extracurricular activities. Take a free class and listen to how many times your children are required to say "yes sir"; it's staggering. Three may be the perfect age to begin a martial arts class, and if you believe your child is a bit hyperactive or doesn't have the ability to focus, these classes may offer a tremendous benefit in fostering the ability to concentrate. Ultimately, with some high kicking, board breaking and positive feedback, increased self esteem and a strong body image will hopefully be the icing on the cake.
To ensure that you're raising a well mannered, kind, respectful child, invest in your relationship TODAY, and sign up for a one-on-one life coaching session. Together, via the use of POSITIVE DISCIPLINE tactics including REWARD CHARTS and other exciting incentives, we will navigate a positive path for your child, and a happier, more peaceful existence for you. Don't hesitate, call Marsha Jacoby, Certified Parenting & Fertility Life Coach, Founder and Owner of womenmakingprogress.com, 917-439-0646 and book your appointment today.

Parenting Tip: To Promote Your Child's zzzz's (restful sleep), a mini massage is a terrific tool!
Since the dawn of time, massage has been a helpful precursor to a restful night of sleep given its inherent ability to reduce stress, promote mindfulness and create a human connection. As a mom of three often restless boys, I can't imagine what I would have done to assist the bedtime process had I NOT had this technique in my "parenting toolbox". Two of my sons are twelve and they're still asking for massage time :)
At a certain age, perhaps six, you can specify the need for quiet while doing your son/daughter's mini back massage...another step toward sleep. If they begin to speak, I remind them to stop and instead focus on the way in which the massage feels...only a few minutes is needed before they hopefully succumb to a calmer state. If you need another arrow in your quiver, try an essential oil massage. Many are believed to promote sleep as well; try lavender or chamomile and let your child choose what smells best and if they want to use it at all.
Under our current circumstances, everyone surely needs an EXTRA dose of pampering. Start tonight and treat yourself to the additional minutes you may amass by having your child fall asleep earlier than normal.

Parenting: Distractions Are Not Just for Toddlers

My own boys are now twelve, twelve and fourteen....aka irish triplets. You would think by now that I've passed the point of having to be a Master of Distraction. Right? Wrong :(

Perhaps it's the sibling rivalry, the closeness in ages, or the witching hour that ensues with the approach of dinnertime.
Whatever the case, I still need to be on my toes with a recipe for distraction in addition to one for dinner! At these ages, an article that covers a human interest story, the current hurricane or tornado approaching, or even election poll numbers might suffice to take the attention away from themselves and on to a different topic.

This purposeful distraction serves to quiet our home and take my blood pressure down a notch. At younger ages, an engaging book (perhaps a joke or riddle book), a buried treasure (rediscovered puzzle or toy) or interesting card game might be a way to allow them to eat while you enjoy special bonding time and more peace in your household. Prepare in advance, not only with meals but with articles of distraction.

They're worth the time!!

How does life coaching differ from therapy?

As a life coach, I do not ask ‘why’ or delve into your past. With the assistance of a life coach, YOU ultimately determine how you'd like your life to take shape. With new insight and perspectives gained from a co-creative relationship, YOU determine the ways in which you'd like to move forward, remove what's stopping or blocking you from accomplishing your goals and continue on with renewed zest and strength to live the life you were meant to live.
